After all kinds of trials and many errors the only option that worked for inputing external spdif source through a convolver was using the listen in option.
In short, in the recording tab I chose the spdif as default. In properties I have chose the listen tab and ticked listen to this device.
In the playback tab JR wdm device was the default played. That way sounds are played through JR convolver and outputted correctly.
For some reason the SPDIF input is locked on 48/24 no matter what the true sampling rate. That means that there is windows resampling. Is there a way to avoid this resampling?

Probably not, since this goes through the windows mixer in any case. But check the settings in windows for using exclusive paths. Perhaps it is possible to establish an exclusive path on the input side. There, you may also be able to increase the sample rate, but I don't know if there's an upside to it.

You can avoid it with Asio streaming, though, for instance with Audiolense convolver.

PS: The windows mixer is pretty good since Windows Vista. Everything is processed in 32 bit float.

Hi Bernt,
It is already in exlusive mode. There is 48/24 or 48/16 so this is it for now. If I could get the Asio streaming from external source to work I wouldn't be looking for other solutions all over the place.

Hi Bernt,
We had numorous emails on this, and have posted a few threads. It just didn't work when I tried to use external spdif input. It works fine for local files. Not with Asio bridge-hifi cable, VB-cable, JR (when AL convolver is assigned as the output devise) even voicemeeter. For playing from external source with RME ff400 this was the only option.

Yes I know. But I am pretty confident that RME and the Al convolver works well together in this scenario.

Unfortunately I don't share your confidence as my experience is otherwise. I will gladly have someone prove me wrong.
