Are all turntables alike?

Depends on how loud you like to go? keep in mind that for short duration's your receiver would output more than 125watts it just cant maintain it. Do you run your mains full range or are you letting the sub take on that duty?

How loud that depends. I would like going closer to reference but have the gain from an external amp to not have to go as loud yet sound as good as reference if this makes sense. Seems like now with movies when I get to -15 on the volume it can sound harsh at times depending on the content.

Then getting an external amp just for the mains might be advantages. You dont need anything monstrous, something rated 200watts per ch would be enough. Remember that the receivers power supply is going to be the weakest link when running all channels with movies.
Google "Samson servo 600" really nice amp for the money. I have two of them.

That changes the equation, if you are trying to drive a full home theater system off of one AVR I think it would benefit to have a separate power amplifier carrier. Not necessarily for a change of sound but for better Power distribution to the channels that will be powered by the separate amplifier.

As you add more speakers to the average AVR the per channel power goes down dramatically.

Awhile back I had tried the 805 for just L,R but could not tell a difference from the x4200. Maybe because the x4200 is rated 125 vs Onkyo 130.
Thanks for suggesting the Samson. Looks like a great addition that won't break the bank. I also looked at Crown XLi2500. Correct me if I am wrong the Samson has 300watts per Ch?

Yes, 300 watts per and has both balanced and unbalanced inputs. It also uses a toroidal power supply (the round donut) they are more efficient and cleaner.

For HT does it not matter much if the Center ch is not connected to an external amp?

no, you can leave it on the receiver. Just remember that you will want to run Adyssey again and likely wont run the gain on the amp much higher than halfway (12 Oclock)
If you want to discuss this particular topic more lets move it here and continue this topic as this thread should be more about turntables.
