Hi all,
I'm an acoustic technician. I'd like to know if REW got a feature to measure STI (Speech Transmission Index) and, of course, a plug-in for signal generator to implement STI signals and speech tests.
If not I think this would be a great feature to add making this software an exceptionally powerful tool. This way it can be used to study also environment for speech as auditorium, classrooms, theatres, PAVA systems, and more.

STI is on the todo list. It can be computed from the impulse response, so there isn't a need to have a special test signal.

That's just great! I know STI can be calculated from IR measure and is an accepted method by CEI EN 60268-16 but all the manufacturers of noise measuring devices use the signal modulation method so they can sell you a 1.000 euros talkbox. Anyway, have you any idea about the time it'll take to be implemented? Thanks again.

John,

I've been using REW now with miniDSP hardware and it is fantastic. I am writing to bump this thread to see if there are any updates towards STI implementation.

Thank you!!

My guess turned out to be wildly optimistic, partly because a house move intervened. Still on the list, but I won't hazard another timescale guess just yet.

Hi all, unlike what was written in 2021, it seems to me that the STI tool has not yet been created... are you planning to do so soon?

Sorry @John Mulcahy when I searched the forum, you wrote that “STI function will be added soon” but there is also this STI image on the site. I am thoroughly confused , I couldn't find the STI calculation section in current v REW. I asked GPT, it told me to go to the STI analysis section after pressing the All Bands button, but I couldn't find all bands anywhere, then it told me to install the old version, I installed v5.20 and still couldn't find it...

Is there an STI calculation section? If so, how can I access it? Thanks a lot

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased the Pro version of REW and I’m interested in performing STI measurements with it.
I’ve been looking through the available documentation, but I’m still a bit unsure about the correct workflow to obtain a proper STI measurement.

Would anyone be willing to share a simple step-by-step overview of the recommended procedure in REW? For example, how you typically handle the signal generation, measurement setup, and the steps needed to derive the STI result.

Any practical advice or pointers from experienced users would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

REW's STI calculation uses the indirect method, so it uses an impulse response. You can get that by making a sweep measurement. The STI panel has buttons to measure signal and noise levels to use for post-processing, or it can calculate the signal levels from the IR, or you can use the RTA in 1 octave mode to make and save separate measurements of signal and noise levels and tell REW which ones to use. For making separate RTA measurements the signal generator has Speech noise options on the random and periodic pink noise tabs.
