(June 9, 2026) Emotiva is expanding its Differential Reference lineup with the launch of the XSP-2 Stereo Preamplifier, a successor to the XSP-1 that aims to preserve the original's flexibility while adding new features designed to accommodate evolving listening habits.

Positioned around a fully balanced analog signal path, the XSP-2 combines traditional preamplifier functionality with an intriguing degree of versatility. Its main analog signal path remains fully balanced and fully differential from the balanced XLR inputs to the balanced main and subwoofer outputs, including volume control and bass management. That bass management supports 2.1 and 2.2-channel configurations with selectable 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, and 100Hz high-pass and low-pass crossover points. Users can also choose between stereo subwoofer operation and summed mono output, allowing the unit to adapt to a wide range of system configurations.

"The XSP-1 is one of the most popular products in the history of the brand," explains Dan Laufman, President of Emotiva Audio Corporation. "It's famous for being a highly flexible preamp that performs well above its price. After years of focused R&D, we're finally ready to launch a worthy successor that retains the sonic benefits that made the original a hit, but with added flexibility across the board."

Analog connectivity remains a major focus. The XSP-2 offers two balanced XLR inputs, four unbalanced RCA inputs, a moving-magnet/moving-coil phono stage for vinyl playback, a processor loop for integrating external devices such as equalizers, and a Home Theater Bypass mode designed to simplify integration into mixed music and surround-sound systems. And, as a cherry on top, Emotiva provides a dedicated headphone output powered by a high-current buffer amplifier designed to drive demanding headphone loads with ease.

One of the more notable design elements is the XSP-2's modular architecture. The preamplifier includes two rear-panel expansion slots, one of which ships populated with a DAC module featuring an ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip. The module adds HDMI-ARC, USB, coaxial, and optical digital inputs while remaining isolated from the analog signal path until its analog output enters the preamplifier stage. A future streaming module is also planned, providing owners with an upgrade path as their needs evolve.

"The XSP-2 is not only a best-in-class preamp for today's consumers, but it's also ready for whatever comes next, including a streamer module that is currently in the works," added Laufman. "When it launches, all it will take is a few easy steps to add it to the XSP-2."

Emotiva says the fully balanced design helps preserve low noise and signal integrity throughout the signal path, with relay-based input switching and precision analog volume control further supporting the unit's audiophile aspirations. Additional features include adjustable subwoofer level trim, trigger inputs and outputs, IR input support, and an all-metal remote control.

The Emotiva XSP-2 Differential Reference Stereo Preamplifier is available now with a suggested retail price of $1,599. For additional information and complete specifications, visit Emotiva's XSP-2 product page.
