[As a follow up to my previous post regarding how impressed I am with both the JVC LX-UH1 and the Panasonic UP820, here are some pics of 4K Blu Ray content, from “Aquaman”. The colours in Aquaman are exceptional. I’ll let the pics do the talking. Images were paused, so any lack of sharpness is due to the limitations of my I Pad camera. Not the actual image I see on screen. Also light highlights on Amber Heard’s face in several photos appear overblown. The actual projected image on screen does not. That is a limitation of my I Pad Pro’s camera. Some shots show various adjustments of the UP820’s tone mapping.

There is a popular, widespread view that DLP projectors are rather lacking in contrast and great blacks. That may have been true of DLP’s from yesteryear. But I challenge that idea currently. The JVC LX-UH1 is an incredibly capable projector. In my opinion, I think far too much emphasis is placed on how black the black bars on top/bottom of the image are. Or how black a static black image is. I think the truest test of black level is how inky blacks look in scenes with bright highlights. I contend only that is the true determination of any projector’s real strengths - because the projector must display both the darkest and brightest areas simultaneously. Many projectors have great blacks, but do so at the expense of bright whites and highlights. What follows are screen shots from 1080p SDR content. In a previous post, I uploaded several shots from ‘Aquaman’ 4K. In those images I was trying to showcase the incredible colour and HDR the LX-UH1 when paired with the Panasonic 820, puts out - [see for example, the last photo where ‘Aquaman’ is jumping out of the sea. Look at the sunset behind him. Nothing is blown out and there is plenty of detail and contrast in the clouds behind him]. In these shots, look closely at how deep the blacks are in shots from ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Sky Fall’. And ‘Hobbit’. Look at colours, detail and contrast. I think the JVC will hold its own against even projectors that cost much more. When all factors that combine to make a great projected image on screen are considered, I believe the LX-UH1 is extremely good. If anyone has an Epson UB series or a JVC D-ILA model, and is willing to post some screen shots of similar pics, I would love to see them.
What do you think? Comments welcomed

Pictures rarely, if ever, capture what is truely going on with a screen shot. I toiled with this for months over at the old forum finally settling on using gray cards to finely tune screen shot pictures. I used a WhiBal card with my old DSLR camera to get accurate shots. At this point in my life though, I just don't know if I'd want to go through all that bother again - shooting an image with the WhiBal card in it, shooting the images as RAW files, downloading them, processing them, resaving them, etc. bleh!

Way too many factors that have to be considered when trying to do this.

Actually I thought that even with the limitations of my IPad Pro’s camera, these pictures were a very good approximation of the projected image. The actual image is superior to the pictures of course...but the photos give a reasonable view.

View attachment 14182 I’ve done a few posts on the pairing of the Panasonic UB820 with the JVC LX-UH1. This one will show some new photos which I think really help as a visual aid to capture what I see projected on screen. For instance, the sheer amount of detail I see on screen in the glowing red lines on Thanos’ arms, the variation of colour, the distinct separation of all those lines and the HDR, is among the very best I’ve seen anywhere. Note: The photos are inferior to the actual image. They are an approximation only. The subtle details in Rebecca Ferguson’s lipstick, eyeshadow, the deep shades of colour of her red hair; the detail in the sparkles on the curtain behind Hugh Jackman, the incredible vibrancy of colour in Amber Heard’s hair, costume; the HDR in the scene where ‘Aquaman’ leaps out of the sea with the sunset behind him - all of these look rather impressive on the JVC DLP. Where you see highlights on faces that appear overblown, that is a limitation of my I Pad Pro’s camera. It is not that way on the actual image. The actual image is superior to all the photos, but the photos come close. I think all in all, when all the elements that make up good picture quality are considered, the JVC LX-UH1 holds it own pretty well against even native 4K D-ILA and higher end Sony’s that cost in many cases, several thousands more. I paid $2600 CAD for the LX-UH1 (approx $1800 USD). What do you think? I welcome comments, feedback.

The chalange of showing in pictures what an image looks like gets even more complicated than what Steve says because even the monitor/device your viewing them on changes what is being displayed. I don't doubt that what you see is amazing and I'm sure it's better than my Panasonic 8000u. The question is how much better? Now that my bulb needs replacement I'm questioning spending money on a bulb or just upgrading the projector

Hi Tony, Yeah, there are def some difficulties displaying pics of a projected image. And you are correct, the screen one is viewing the images on can be either a limitation or a revelation. Having said that, for those who may be interested in having some realistic approximation of the image quality of either the JVC LX-UH1 or the UB820, before they commit to the purchase, or even for those who just may be curious?, pics can def assist with the viewer getting a good approximation of the image.
Otherwise, why would anyone ever post a review of anything then? Because the same argument re: possible limitations of the way each one can view the image, would be true for anyone, at any time. Otherwise, all we have is the personal subjective opinion of the reviewer as to anything being good, great or otherwise.
I would def recommend you getting the LX-UH1. I’m quite sure it is visibly sharper, has better clarity, colour. And as my pics demonstrate- it has very solid contrast as well.

I'm enjoying seeing these screen shots... good stuff. I especially like that you're totally digging this JVC projector!!! :T That, to me, is the most important factor. But, it's also great to have this particular JVC dissected and analyzed.

Keep the info coming!

Hey Todd,
Yes I am rather impressed with the LX-UH1. I realize of course that it’s blacks and contrast can’t match the higher end D-ILA models, one of which I hope to own one day. But nevertheless, it still puts out a very impressive image.
Did you see the recent 4K screen shots from Infinity War/Greatest Showman/Aquaman?
The glowing ropes on Thanos arms look insanely good. The detail, clarity, gradations of colour and distinction between lines that I see on screen, is amazing. The clarity, colour in Greatest Showman is superb and the colours in Aquaman are insane. As good as the pics look, they don’t capture the full spectrum of what I see. The UB820 def brings out the best in the LX-UH!
I’m going to post some screen shots in next few days from ‘Justice League’ 4K. Being mastered at 4000 nits, the HDR is noticeably bright.

Having been mastered (or filmed? Sorry, I’m not an expert) at 4000 nits, ‘Justice League’ is a great movie for HDR viewed on my LX-UH1 paired with Panasonic Reference Quality UB820 UHD Player. Here are some screen shots. I haven’t finished watching the movie...and was enjoying how great it looks. There are other ‘laser beam’ shots in the end battle, which I’ll upload later. For now, these photos again give a very realistic, though not complete approximation of what I see on screen. In the scenes with Lois and Clark in the field, the glow of golden sunlight on their faces is much warmer, richer on screen. The edges of Diana’s lasso around Clark’s arm are noticeably more defined on screen - again, limitations of my camera. My I Pad Pro cannot resolve everything perfectly. The same is true again of light highlights on faces. If these areas appear a lil overblown in the photos, they do not in the actual projected image. Enough chat..here are some shots. Feedback always welcomed!
