How many subwoofers are you using in your main system or home theater?

music listening only, here. not even a tv, let alone h/t. listening room is 26x38x8.5. two vmps larger subs 6' from the front wall, 12' from the listening area. a pair of aci sub-1's sit directly behind them. 20' behind the listening area against the rear wall are a 2nd pair of vmps larger subs. as the room opens to two other spaces, it barely pressurizes the listening area. the vmps subs are really musical; they will do 115db at 20hz w/max 2.5% distortion. powering the front subs and the aci's are one channel of a pair of crown xls2000's, crossed over at 60hz. the other channel of each crown powers 15" fostex pro audio drivers in heavily strengthened klipsch lascala cabinets, from 60-175hz.. the vmps' in the back of the room are driven by a home-brew hypex amp which puts out 180wpc into the vmps' 4 ohm load. the crowns see a 2 ohm load with the aci and the vmps connected in parallel, which means they can put out >1kw. but they don't need nearly that much power as they're quite efficient.

i have tang band w8-1772's in oris 150 horns, run from 175hz-7khs, w/beryllium ribbons tweeters salvaged from a pair of pioneer s-1010's >7khz. this completes the actively quad-amped system, which measures quite flat in my room. i'm looking forward to the arrival of a pair of bms 4590 coax compression drivers and adapters designed by oris to hook them up to the 150's. according to oris' owner/designer, it's a killer improvement, superior to even the spendy fullrange drivers from aer, lowther, voxativ, etc.

How many subs do you use in your main listening room or home theater?
What are the brands?
How are you equalizing your subs?
Do you have plans to add more?

I'm currently satisfied with my setup of two JTR 4000ULF-TL Captivators + six 2400 Captivators. I'm using the two 4000 units with dual 18s as my main subwoofers, and the other six are support subs using Dirac Live ART.

22,400 watts powering ten 18-inch subs in a 19.5ft x 23.5ft x 8.5ft fully sealed room. :hsd:
I currently have two 12” XTZ SUB 12.17 Edge.
I’m using Dirac Live for calibration.
Have been thinking about investing in a couple more subs. Not necessarily two of the same model.
Maybe one bigger to help with the tactile feeling. I could place it directly behind my seating. But this would
be in the middle of the room, about two thirds distace from the front wall. Don’t know if that would improve
or make bass worse?!

My room is quite small, atleast the width, so I don’t have infinite space to have many or large subs.
It measures 6.9 x 3.6 x 2.4 meters (LxWxH) which is about 22.6 x 11.8 x 7.8 feet.
I have one row of seating for three persons.
It’s a livingroom that I have setup with 9.2.4.

I have two Emotiva Airmotiv XS10 Subwoofers connected to a Marantz SR6014 AVR. I use the Marantz Audysset MultiEQ to equalize the subs along with the rest of my 5.2 setup. I do not plan to add more subs. The L-C-R speakers are old Emotiva ERM-1's that still sound great after so many years, and my side surrounds are a pair of Emotiva ERD-1's.

I have two old Velodyne 5000's and two old Klipsch 12's (down firing).
All are in corners of a 24' square(ish) room with 9 foot ceilings.
I bought a MiniDSP 2x4HD but haven't set it up yet. - Looks like lots of work.

Earlier in my large living room setup (22 feet x 14feet) with open kitchen I had 4 sub woofers ( 2 SVS SB4000 and 2 Golden Ear ) all equalised through 2x4 mini DSP HD. It was working very good. Now I have shifted and shall be having dedicated home theatre room 13x11 and shall install only 2 subs initially SB 4000 2 nos. I think it should be more than sufficient because I am getting the room properly Acoustically treated. The room is of brick wall. So I am installing 1 layer of MLv 3mm , then Isolation block 25 mm, polywool 25 mm, 12 mm perforated ply, then 12 mm foam with fabric. Will update once this setup is complete

I have two Klipsch SW12 driven by Yamaha A8A, equilised by Yamaha YPAO. I have mid-size living room. It is more than adequate. Gain is set at about 40%. More than adequate for the room. At higher gain, the windows in the house rattle

Two PSA 1813M subwoofers and an Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual Core for the EQ. As for plans to add more, well I don’t have any plans right now, but since when do we ever need plans to improve/upgrade the home theater?……and I’m not married so no WAF!!!

11.

4 x Rythmik 15", 1 x REL 15", 2 x REL 12", 2 x SVS 12" and 2 x 18" Subzeros.

Using Trinnov Waveforming.

Room is 5.2 x 3.2 x 2.45 m.

Still rockin my Boston Vr -2000 subs x 2. Almost pulled the trigger today on 2 RSL speed woofers 12” when I caught wind that JTR will be releasing a 12” sub. Now, I’m holding out a tad bit longer to see what Jeff delivers😁

I am running 4 x XTZ 10.17 edge in sealed mode. 3 up front in a LCR configuration, and one to the side to fill a response dip and shake our L-shaped couch. Using a Marantz Cinema 40 with Dirac Bass Control in a 5 4.6 setup. Don't have room for bigger subs, and the 4 identical 700w RMS pack a punch.

The sealed mode works better than ported. Did a lot of experiments and measured with REW. I Also never liked ported subwoofers.even with low RT60.

How are you liking the Waveforming?

Using a Trinnov and 11 subs in a 5.2 by 3.2 meter space? Wow!!
The bass must be massive! Potentially earbursting if run at reference.. 😎
Is this correct?
May I ask how the rest of your system is set up?

Hi! My answer - I try to avoid of a sub use at all. To be honest, it's not simple task for Home Theater, but stereo, especially if your speaker's pair has LF range from 25-30 Hz. Due to dependence between Acoustical Room Dimensions and LF Power Point for equilateral triangle: sources-the test point, one may to do without any sub. Sometimes it works, but when not, - you have to use one, better two subs, placing them close to front speakers. I understand, that by means of multity of subs you can obtain smooth FR for LF range. But this way, to my opinion, is too expensive and not convenient for small rooms.

Had up to 3 running in my living room cinema. All 12" DIY in closed boxes. they had been measured and tamed by Dirac on a MiniDSP DRC-88A plus bass management.
I have one more box ready plus 4 more chassis that are waiting for their chance.

I have 2 JTR RS1's in my dedicated cinema.

I use a Trinnov Altitude 16 to EQ my subs and plan on adding another 2 RS1's or maybe something a little cheaper for waveforming at some point in the next few years or so.

I am a speaker designer from 1978. Nowadays I use a couple of (horn) subwoofers, one against the front wall, the other on the back wall, opportunely phased and delayed to cancel the first room resonances.
The results are visible in the two graphs below: the first shows responde including direct arrival, while the second shows what happens after half a second of decay. Note that the only resonance remaining is below subwoofer passband.
SUB-FC_dir+rifl.jpg
SUB-FC_solo-rifl+tab.jpg
esidue resonance is below subwoofer passband.

lol... well... six of them are support subs used in the DLART processing, although I see them move more than my main subs at times. That's probably because the main subs have two 18s each.

It really makes the sub-bass effortless in my room.
Fantastic, if you can do that, why not :T

I have 11.

2 x Yamaha YST-160 (2x8” pr sub) on L and R. 5 x AudioPro B2-50 (2x6.5” pr sub) and 4 x Eltax Atomic 15.2R (1x15” pr sub).

In addition to that, 2 pcs of Buttkicker Concert and 1 pc of Buttkicker LFE. The 2 Concerts are run by the Buttkicker Amp and the Buttkicker LFE on another Buttkicker Amp.

All controlled from a Behringer DCX2496.

Wow, I can only imagine how good some of these setups must sound. My setup is pretty modest. The 7.2.2 system is in a rather large living room (26 x 16) and the two subs I'm running are SVS SB 3000's. They are located in opposite corners of the room. I used the room correction software on the Marantz SR 7015 to setup with the system. The system sounds pretty nice, although I strongly suspect all the systems listed in thread sound much better!!
