Andover Audio Takes Hi-Fi on the Go with New FreePlay Bluetooth Speaker

(July 7, 2026) Portable Bluetooth speakers have become remarkably good at filling spaces with sound. The challenge is that many of them achieve that goal by prioritizing volume over fidelity, often relying on mono driver layouts and digital processing to create the illusion of a more spacious soundstage. Andover Audio believes there's a better approach. The new FreePlay is the company's first portable Bluetooth speaker, bringing its "Hi-Fi for Modern Living" philosophy outdoors with an emphasis on true stereo sound and musical realism rather than simply playing louder than the competition.

Designed and engineered in Boston, FreePlay represents a natural extension of Andover Audio's compact hi-fi lineup. It is built around a true stereo architecture featuring dual 25mm dome tweeters, dual 5.25" aluminum-cone woofers, and a large 160mm rear-mounted passive radiator. Rather than blending everything into a single point of sound, the design preserves the dimensionality of a stereo recording, producing a wider, more believable soundstage with clearer instrument separation and balanced full-range performance.

Andover says FreePlay carries the same sonic philosophy found in its home audio products, but packages it in a travel-friendly enclosure that's equally comfortable on a bookshelf, kitchen counter, patio, or out in the wild. At 9 pounds, it's substantial enough to house a serious driver complement while remaining easy to carry thanks to a fold-down handle. Utility tie-down bars built into the sides also allow the speaker to be clipped or secured during transport.

The feature set extends well beyond sound quality. FreePlay carries an IP67 dust- and waterproof rating, making it suitable for everything from poolside listening to camping trips while also capable of surviving temporary submersion. Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours at moderate listening levels, while Bluetooth 6.0 with LE Audio promises stable wireless performance in crowded environments. There's also a USB-C port for charging the speaker and powering external devices, a built-in Qi wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones, a 3.5mm auxiliary input, and even microphone support for more flexible use.

For times when music needs to reach a larger crowd, Andover includes a selectable Party Mode that wirelessly links up to 99 other FreePlay speakers for synchronized playback. And if one speaker simply isn't loud enough, a Loud Mode can add an additional 6dB of output at the touch of a button.

Ease of use was clearly a priority as well. Rather than relying on a companion app, FreePlay places playback controls, volume, track selection, battery status, pairing functions, and listening modes directly on the top panel, allowing users to control the speaker without reaching for their phone.

Visually, FreePlay takes a different approach than many portable speakers that lean toward rugged industrial styling. Instead, Andover opted for a softer aesthetic with clean lines and a choice of Ivory, Olive, or Slate finishes designed to blend into modern living spaces just as comfortably as outdoor environments. Each speaker also ships with a matching shoulder bag featuring a cinch-top closure for added protection and easier transport.

The Andover Audio FreePlay is available for preorder now through Andover Audio with an MSRP of $429.
