Here are the pics as it stands now. I may move the subwoofer over beside the left speaker and slide the equipment rack back towards the right shelf unit to make the seating position more central. I also have the pics posted in my gallery.

Is this room pretty much movies... or do you do any serious music listening?

What are the dimensions?

Is this room pretty much movies... or do you do any serious music listening?

What are the dimensions?

Doesnt the turntable and 2 cassette decks give it away? *LOL* I use it for both and put equal weight on both.

Main-2 is before the move, main-16 is after the move. I tested it out briefly thinking the move would hurt the stereo imaging but it doesn't. I will work with it for a week or so before I decide if I'm going to keep it this way.

As it stands right now, I formed an equal lateral triangle between speakers and center of the couch of approximately 76 inches. I have not yet run YPAO after the move. That's tomorrow's job.

Looking at main-3, the width is 11'6" across measured left to right . Looking at main-4, the room is 17' from the window wall to the bottom of the surround if extended a line from the surround to the floor. You can see the bulkhead starting at main-4.

Have you thought about making the narrow part of the room the width so that you can pull your speakers out from the front wall and keep your listening position from being up against the back wall? I'd say that would greatly improve your imaging, sound stage and depth acuity. My first HT room was 11.5" wide by 19.5" deep... and I was about 12ft back from the front wall... speakers about 2ft out into the room, with a slight toe-in to keep them from bouncing off the side wall. Sounded really nice.

I hear you loud n clearand thought about that Sonnie but here are my two issues.

  1. That window on the back wall would be partially blocked by the TV. It would look awkward. I could now get away with it since I lost my spouse to cancer in October and wouldnt have any push back.
  2. This room is in the finished part of a town hose and it would make the room feel closed in.
That's what I'm wrestling with at the moment.

Hmmm... bigger TV? Love spending your money. :spend:

Maybe a couple of large acoustic panels... or drapes hanging on the wall.

Your going to get tired of me soon then. I have no money. I have a question about speaker orientation for the atmos pair that I'm hanging on the ceiling. Do I keep the woofer tweeter orientation in the same plane as my mains and surrounds or do I hang them 90 degrees to that?

I think from front to back you would keep them in line, but facing down from the ceiling... and if you can angle the tweeter a little towards the middle, that might be better, but I don't think it's necessarily required. Your YPAO is going to set the level based on the primary listening position anyway. I've seen a LOT of different placements, especially those who are trying to mix/share Atmos and Auro3D.

Those speakers and brackets look like a nice setup for Atmos. What are they?

As for orientation, if they’re a two way consider having them oriented so both the mid-woofer and tweeter are both facing you. Or put another way, as if the speaker was laying on its side. Dispersion is much wider on the “normal” horizontal plane than the vertical. Might help.

Thanks. The speakers are PSB CS1000 indoor/outdoor speakers and comes with that bracket. The brackets are versatile. They are oriented with the tweeter towards the listener position.

Looked up the CS1000. It’s larger than it seems in your pics. (9-1/4"W x 12-1/4"H x 11-3/4"D (including bracket)). Seems very capable. Should excel as a height channel speaker. And no 8” holes in your ceiling :)

Oh yeah... for overhead... those will be more than enough. You only get very ambient sound from the top anyway. Nice!

Completed with the last replacement woofer coming in from PSB. I took pictures of the inside of the speaker as I was replacing the driver. My room is ready now. I still have to calibrate with YPAO for now. Haven't got the minidsp2x4HD up and running yet.

I've been busy with REW lately..using it yesterday to find the best location for my single sub. I found it left of the fireplace as shown below. The couch spans 6' across so I took 3 measurements, at the center, 24" to right of center, and 24" left of center.
Main-3.JPG

Here's just the bass response with no PEQ;
sub_at_new_location.jpg

Today I took full frequency sweeps with various settings of YPAO. The results are not very good and I'm wondering if being too close to the back wall is the culprit at play. The mic is only 19" from the back wall. Here are the results at 1/6 smoothing for each of the PEQ curves. Crossovers were set to 80 Hz.

YPAO=Flat

YPAO=Natural

YPAO=Front (based on the Main capabilities)

Are you concerned about the dip in the 85ish to 120ish range?
It could be the distance settings are off. And by that I mean the subs and mains are not in phase through the crossover region.
Do you know how to take measurements with an acoustic timing reference in REW?
With that, the phase alignment between the mains and sub can be checked and possibly adjusted to get a better result.
You will need the following measurements with the XO on and set to 80hz if that's what you wish to check. .
20hz to 300hz
Make a note of the existing distance settings in the Yamaha for each speaker. As any adjustments will be an adjustment from the existing settings.
Run with whatever version of YPAO you prefer.

- Front right only with No Sub
- Front left only with No Sub
- Sub only with no fronts active. (Note: Send the measurement signal to a speaker set to small. Not the LFE channel, which looks to be how you got the sub measurement (the first one) in preceding post.

With these measurements REW's alignment tool can be used to check and adjust the phase of the sub and mains to align as best as possible (by adjusting the distance setting is the Yamaha).
Can help you figure out the acoustic timing reference if you need it.
You may also find a different XO is more favorable. To check this, the same measurements will need to be done for each XO setting you wish to try.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about it from a paper perpsective but I don't know anything different from an audibility point of view as I suspect this was present all along and I do not know anything different. I DON'T know how to take measurements with an acoustic timing reference in REW. I'm always willing to learn.

- Front right only with No Sub
- Front left only with No Sub
- Sub only with no fronts active. (Note: Send the measurement signal to a speaker set to small. Not the LFE channel, which looks to be how you got the sub measurement (the first one) in preceding post.

Are you saying the following
  1. Leave YPAO in any configuration I choose when taking these sweep measurements in REW.
  2. Turn off the sub and disconnect each speaker in turn when running the sweeps in REW
  3. The sub is connected at the sub via the LFE input, not left or right when I determined the best room location. You want me to connect to either left or right input rather than LFE at the sub? When I did the room location measurements, I set the mains and all of my speakers to small and had the crossover set to the highest point that the Yamaha let me which is 200 Hz. I also turned off YPAO.

I will most likely need help :) Thank you for helping me out this far.

Yes because the YPAO filters affect the phase repose also.

Turn off the sub and disconnect each speaker in turn when running the sweeps in REW

Best answer on how depends on if you can send a measurement sweep to center channel from REW.
You do not want any of the signal sent to the sub going to any other speaker. (reminds me mention to set the Yamaha to "Straight" so no mixers or dsp programs are active.)
You do not want any of the signal going to a main also going to the sub.

The sub is connected at the sub via the LFE input, not left or right when I determined the best room location. You want me to connect to either left or right input rather than LFE at the sub? Nope, keep the sub connected to the Sub output which is for both the LFE CHANNEL and re-directed managed bass. The way you did the measurements was good in that it is the only way to bypass the LFE low pass filter (without plugging the sub into another channel) and get the subs measurement beyond 120Hz.

Hi John, I'm still not understanding what your asking me to do below. I think your telling me to run the bass sweeps with YPAO on crossovers set to 80 Hz (current setting) with the front right speaker only no sub, left front speaker only no sub. I think I already did the sub when I determined the best location in the room.

On an aside and as far as I can tell, I do'nt get output from the center, surround, and atmos channels when running a full frequency sweep. Just the mains and the sub. I can tell my disconnecting one lead from each main and see if I get any sound. I will verify this and let you know.

The other idea that sprang up in my mind is using the delay dial on the sub to see if I can reduce that null. I will report on that too.

My mic is no longer turning and my laptop no longer sees it. I've opened a ticket with miniDSP.

What you said is all correct.
Added to that is the measurements must be taken with an acoustic timing reference.

On an aside and as far as I can tell, I do'nt get output from the center, surround, and atmos channels when running a full frequency sweep. Just the mains and the sub. I can tell my disconnecting one lead from each main and see if I get any sound. I will verify this and let you know.

The question I intended was IF you could route a signal to one of those speakers ONLY if you wanted to. On a windows machine a HDMI connection and soundcard driver such as ASIO4ALL are needed.

The other idea that sprang up in my mind is using the delay dial on the sub to see if I can reduce that null. I will report on that too.

Definitely a process of changing settings and re-measuring can be used to see if a better result can be achieved.
Somewhat recently, REW added added the Alignment Tool feature. Now instead instead multiple measurements taken to find the best result, just the 3 mentioned for this exercise and the alignment tool will calculate and show the rest.
Here's an example:

You may or may not find that YPAO has set the delays (distances) and levels optimally.

Taking the same 3 measurements with a different XO may or may not show a XO other than 80Hz to work better (for you).

A journey like this is all up to you of course and if taken you may find you have a preference for something other than the best looking SPL chart and if that's the case go with your ears.

I've ordered another UMIK1 from Amazon but with protection this time since miniDSP support on their products is worse than dismal.

On the upside, my new couch came in. Its long enough for me to sleep on it with a little room to spare. I will be picking up a rectangular storage ottomon that fits between the two seats when the seat are extended so the person in the middle spot can put their feet up too.
