What's with the new odd aspect ratio on some shows?

recently I've noticed a growing trend of some shows in what looks to be about 2:1? Why are they using this ratio?
 
Star Trek Discovery for one
It's got thin black bars top and bottom but it's not 2:35:1
 
Must be going for a cinematic feel for the show. But odd that it's not just 2.35:1. Have you researched this?
 
According to one website it says " CBS has allowed us to find a cinematic language that’s wider in scope — our aspect ratio is 2:1 — and it just lends itself to a very lyrical way of telling the story"
It looks to be around 2:00:1 or something like that.

I haven't seen anything like that on DirecTV. :dontknow:
 
2.00:1 has become a new variation for TV shows and movies recently. I'm noticing more and more showing up all the time
