JVC 6800, huh? That predates the first one we had, the 7100. Got it so my wife could watch her soap operas in hi-def (for the time) video. That means between recording and playback it was operating four hours a day, five days a week. And that didn’t even count any night-time or weekend shows we recorded.

We subsequently got a couple other JVCs, a 7300 and a 7600. At one time we had three JVC S-VHS machines. That’s what it took if you wanted the capability to watch a tape and record two other shows. A $200 TIVO can do now what over $1500 worth of high-end VCRs used to do, but undoubtedly the VCRs make for a more impressive equipment rack.

The 7100 saw the heaviest use because it was the oldest, but it outlasted the other two. We still have it in a closet somewhere, and it still works.

Regards,
Wayne

I got two of the 6800s about 15 years ago. I realized that VCRs were going away and picked them up on ebay as people dumped them. I gave one to my parents and kept one. The one I gave my parents originally cost me $15 from ebay, $6 for a replacement drive gear, and $0.50 for a bad capacitor. $22 for a VCR that is still working (I did have to recap the power supply). I love those old JVCs.

That’s just sick! We paid I think $6-700 each for the 7100 and 7300, and maybe $4-500 for the 7600. :(

To be fair, both of my 6800s were not working when I bought them. Both had a broken main drive gear. I think I got the other one for about $30, so close to $40 after repairs. People were just dumping them in the early 2000s.
