Some advice on measurements and correction

Hi,

Was hoping to get some expert advice on first time REW measurements and an attempt at correction. Graphs are attached. Despite moving the speakers around (19 X 14 room), I could never make much of a dent in those100-300 hz dips so left them alone. The midrange peaks around 1K are similar when moving the mic all around the listening position - up and down, forward and back, and side-to-side - so took a long average of all of them.

Did this "simple" EQ strategy make things better or worse? It sounds better!

Best to post the .mdat file. Measure, L, R, and L+R. Worthing including Ear locations as well as a Centre. Step well away from the Mic.

Am curious to know whether the "gentle" EQs to smooth out 500-2500 is angering the EQ gods by causing massive phase shifts that I am too deaf to hear. I don't see them on the excess phase graph however. Thank you,

They don't matter if you're too deaf to hear them. :)
I'd be more concerned about the massive hole in the 100-500hz region. :confused:
Any chance of posting photos of your setup?

I am curious about those two bass peaks. Your pre-EQ notes say to ":Take a little off", then on the post-EQ plots those bass peaks are increased. Is that what you wanted?

Is your room's inside walls made out drywall? That would explain the suck-out at 100 Hz - 300 Hz. The RT 60 is higher in the midrange and high frequencies then in the bass. This is unique to 'drywall' rooms. In the midrange you lose a lot of information, precision and detail through the long RT60. Before going into EQ, I would fix that.

Can you post a diagram and details of your speaker type, setup and position? Do you have subwoofers? Where are the low pass filters set?
You could try entering the details in the REW Room Sim to see if the results match those which you have measured at the primary listening position, then post a screen shot. Remember to measure to the centre of the driver rather than the centre of the speaker cabinet.

Looks like you're missing the best of the bass region due to destructive boundary interference. Also, an average of all possible speaker/mic positions will not give you a realistic result. It's better to only measure within the areas where you are actually going to sit, such as the front row of seats facing the speakers (and obviously keeping the best seat for yourself). The problem with trying to average too many locations that are far apart is that the result is a combined result of positions that won't be used. Half a foot forward or backward is going to make a huge difference at those frequencies so you might be better off finding the best mic position and then moving your seat (thus, your ears) to meet it.
