(September 25, 2017) Record collecting just got a tad more satisfying to the tummy. Over the years, fans of the needle and groove have seen quite a few interesting takes on standard vinyl, with pressing of various shapes, sizes, and colors. But Oreo and a Hong Kong advertising agency (Dimension Plus) are pushing the format to an entirely new dimension with the introduction of Oreo Vinyl.

Oreo and Dimension Plus are ditching the traditional Oreo cookie exterior embossing in favor of a grooved surface that’s actually capable of playing music. The playable cookies are being included as part of a special “Oreo Music Pack,” complete with a miniature Oreo Vinyl Record Player.

“Borrowing the concept and mechanics of a vinyl record, the data on the cookie is embossed with a mod which is made with laser cutting and engraving technique. And we wrote a program to transform the music into a pattern,” explains Dimension Plus. “After that, we make it into a laser-engraving friendly format and produce the mod for the Oreo Vinyl production.”

The Music Pack ships with six cookies, each capable of playing the Oreo anthem in a different musical style. And, of course, you can eat the cookies once you’ve listened to them.

Oreo has yet to release any information concerning pricing and availability.

Couldn't help myself on this one.... pretty cool!

Very nice. I guess you can't keep the "records" for longevity .. lol. :)

There is really no help for you on this one Todd. :whistling:

HAHA! This is hilarious yet creative. My kids love Oreos I can't wait to show them this.

Once you eat an Oreo can you order more? And if you don't eat them how long do they last?

Great questions... I've sent an inquiry about possible availability. If they answer, I'll ask!

It is amazing what the mind can generate.. Innovation at it's finest!.. :)

Wait, I thought it was September, not April :sneeky:

Ok, I'll bite . Inquiring minds want to know if there will be a Double Stuff vinyl LP version.

To me, this would be fun to have.

Well... no response from the HK ad agency. So no info (yet) on whether or not this is something that can be purchased in the US.

That'll be the live album next year.

Many of the reviews so far are saying the sound quality is pretty crummy. Others have said if you really take the time to position yourself, you can find the sweet spot. I guess it depends on whether or not the recordings are well suited to your personal tastes. From my experience, records made from these materials rarely last more than a day, so it really doesn't seem like a great investment. Hopefully it comes with a decent warranty.
