In line with their typical practices, Warner Bros. has farmed out their long-running hit show (well, at least they’re the physical media production company), Lucifer, to their MOD line for a full series release this January. And like most of these sets, they’re absolutely fantastic for space-saving, getting into the series for the first time, and a boon for completionists, with the typical caveat of using those crisscross disc holders in a DVD-height case (grumble, whine, nitpick).
Born from the comics (and was surprisingly not on The CW with Arrow, The Flash, etc.), the Prince of Darkness himself descends to L.A. in order get a break from his punishment of ruling hell for countless millennia. After spending years being a veritable playboy in the city of sin, “Luci” (Tom Ellis) is captivated by lovely police detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), gets sucked into the world of criminals and miscreants, wherein he uses his powers to track down and punish people for their literal crimes on earth.
Part police procedural, and part supernatural drama, Lucifer was that show where this reviewer ended up liking it a LOT more than he thought he would. My first thought upon checking out a few episodes back in 2016-2017 was that it was just another police procedural with a goofy gimmick (most procedurals have a gimmick that makes it stand out from the vast majority of other similar procedurals), and in this case, the gimmick was “da debil”! And in many ways, I wasn’t wrong. Lucifer plays out very much like a typical police procedural for the first two seasons, with Lucifer’s big secret playing as a back story for the episodic nature of the show. But it’s really season 3 where the show takes off, adding more and more dark elements to the series, culminating with a battle between Lucifer and biblical Cain (played wonderfully by Smallville’s Tom Welling)….and this is where we are almost to the last of the series. AS you may know, Fox is notorious for canceling shows WAY before their expiration date (it’s almost a fetish for them, I swear), and guess what? Fox canceled Lucifer after the 3rd season, just after Chloe finds out about the REAL Lucifer.

Final Score:
Despite the 6th season being past the series sell-by date, the show is remarkably light-hearted and fun for the subject matter. Tom Ellis absolutely OWNS the role of Lucifer, and it adds a fun twist for those of us who like police procedural shows. As someone who watched part of the show on DVD and part on Blu-ray, it’s finally nice to have a complete collection of the series in HD for the first time. And once more, my only real complaint of the SET (not the last season of the show) is that Warner is still using those DVD height mega pack disc holders instead of individual season Blu-ray cases. Something that bugs me as a collector. That being said, this is still a VERY solid set, simply repackaging all 6 seasons in one space-saving container without leaving anything out extras-wise, or making a new, more compressed disc. Solid thumbs up from me.
