JVC DLA-RS620U Projector

MSRP for the 420, 520 and 620 is 3995, 6995 and 9995 respectively. Of course we are seeing them for less in various places.

Those JVC's are sweet! I think you would enjoy them both, which ever one you decide on. I'm sure you could table mount it until you get your mount if yours doesn't work.

As far as duct tape goes...I think we need to do a duct tape round up. Just to compare the strengths and weaknesses of different brands. I know that some of the military grade stuff my dad brought home is way better that the WalMart stuff. Heck, we could even have a duct tape giveaway! Ok, ok...so maybe that's pushing it a little.

I don't believe in a blind AB test that you would be able to tell a difference. Duct tape is duct tape... it's all the same.

Okay... who blatantly derailed this thread with duct tape. :rolleyesno:

Brian - I've seen the Epson demos, too. For the money, they have excellent quality.

I had an interesting chat with Epson PR at CE Week last year (where they were also showing their new shift-PJs)... they basically admitted that their new PJs fall slightly short of JVC in PQ. BUT, to their point, the price difference is huge! Quite frankly, if considering budget, you can't lose with the new Epsons.

MSRP on the 420 and 520 is $3999 and $6999... still competitive when looking at Sony's cheapest true 4K PJ.

My understanding is that JVC has continued to run with e-shift largely to keep cost down.

(let's meet up at CEDIA this year... better planning on my part. Promise! :T)

Have you ever tried Gorilla Glue Duct Tape? (hint: you'll experience a difference )

Yeah, I guess when the time comes I'll have to decide if the JVC 420 is worth $1000 more than the Epson 5040 is.

Shortly after CEDIA last year I switched jobs and will no longer be attending CEDIA, unfortunately. I do like that trade show.

I got this mount back when I had the Panasonic 2000. I believe it is one of the Chief universal mounts, but I can't remember. I am going to try it... if it don't work I will be delayed a couple of days until I can get one in the house. 2 days of crying won't be soooo terribly bad.

Okay... so now I know how to keep from crying for two days... duct tape to the rescue. Thank you Peter for reminding me how resourceful us country redneck hillbillies can be. :T

Is it the universal Chief with the three or four "spider" arms? If so the 420 will NOT work with it without some modifaction. Best bet is to get the 420/520 add on "plate" because the holes are just offset enough that the normal spider arms don't work unless you jury rig them. I ran into that problem with my RS46 because JVC is weird and made their mount holes just a little bit too wide .... It's not a big deal, but the chief mount WILL work, you just might have to buy the add on adapter plate for your projector. And I do say so that it makes the whole thing a little more stable too.

Here's the thing, the Epson 5040ub is an EXCELLENT projector. Like I'm shocked at how good it is for $2500... the JVC ISSSSSSSSSSSSS better, but not by THAT much. If you have the money to blow, I would choose the JVC, but it's one of those situations where you're getting an extra 10% quality for 50% increase in price. It is noticeable if you have light controlled room, but if you're not willing to drop an extra grand, then I wouldn't fault you with the 5040ub... I think the 5040ub is NEARLY as good as my RS46 in terms of contrast, but actually has just as good black levels + the ability to process 4K images and use HDR like the Eshift JVCs..... It's actually on my list of items to think about getting in the future

One thing to remember is that the JVC that we saw at AXPONA that was so good was VERY well calibrated by Michael, using external LUTs to get it really tight. Either set would probably be good, but either could also get that last edge with a really good calibration.

Yeah, I'm confident I wouldn't be disappointed with the Epson. I appreciate excellent black levels, and I will have a light-controlled, non-light-reflective room that would allow me to appreciate the blacker blacks the JVC is capable of. But in truth I'm more particular about audio than video. I'm really not sure which way I'll go, and it may depend on how much money is left after doing what I intend to do audio-wise.

Hey I've been looking at JVC for quite some time too. Didn't know that the 400/500 replacement had already been announced. What are the 420 and 520 MSRP going to be?

$4K for the 420 and $7K for the 520 according to pj central.

Amazon is selling the Sony VPLVW365ES for $8000. I believe it is a true 4K projector.

and sony has had panel failure's from that series for a couple years now. While I'm not a panic person, I'd be leary of newer sony PJs until more info comes in on longevity (or buy a really good extended warranty)

Black levels on this PJ are not good...it might play well in a semi-lit family room, but in a true black-out theater you'd notice. This is the entry model for someone that "just has to have 4K." But, if you have to take into account the fact that there are quite a few more important components when it comes to picture quality (contrast being a big one).

that too, the black levels are weaker than the 5040ub and any of the JVC eshift models.

Notably weaker... you really have to jump up to Sony's next model (Which runs close to $14K, if memory serves) to begin getting black levels that run well in a light controlled room.

To update the thread... I decided to go all out and grabbed the JVC DLA-RS620 and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow (Tuesday).

what Phillip said... That is a big jump from the 420 :D

I know... but as many of you know, I am a dealer for several brands, and JVC just happens to be one of them, so this will be my dealer demo unit for a year or so. We are also working on getting setup to sell brands here an AV NIRVANA... JVC will be one of these brands, at least tentatively they are set to go. It will be a few months before we get it all organized.

oh ho ho...we may sell JVCs???? now that is something tha would intrigue me as I'm looking at upgrading my JVC RS46 in the next year or two.... as Mr. Burns would say "exxxxxcellent"

I have to go thru the process of actually getting AV NIRVANA, LLC setup as an authorized dealer for the brands we intend to sell, which selling on the Internet is no real easy hoop to jump thru with some manufacturers and distributors, but we believe we can get there with many of the major brands.

I don't doubt it
