Group by output

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I last used REW in my studio and recently I noticed there's now a way to group measurements automatically, which works well for multi-input setups and I appreciate the added feature.

I don't see a way to group measurements by output though, which would be really nice for single mic measurements of multichannel setups (5.1 and higher).

Am I missing a hidden button somewhere?

There's an option to prefix the measurement name with the output, and on overlay graphs an option to sort the measurements alphabetically, so that could be used to arrange measurements by output for later grouping.

Got it. It would be nice to have an option to group by output, though — that would save a couple of steps in the process.

By the way, I’m a bit confused about the difference between selecting a measurement and enabling it in the graph window under the All SPL tab. Or is there even a difference? The confusion started because there seems to be a bug: when selecting multiple measurements in the left panel and adding them to a group, some don’t get moved into the group. However, if I then sort them alphabetically, they suddenly appear in their correct groups.

Also, when a measurement is selected/displayed, it shows with black (or blue) text on a white background in the left panel. If I deselect or hide it, the text becomes faded with a grayish background. That makes sense — but when that same measurement is part of a group and the group has a color assigned, the hidden measurement takes on the group color instead of just fading out. Maybe it’s just me, but that feels counterintuitive: it shows plain white when visible, but takes the color when hidden?

To me, it would make more sense if either:
  1. the group color were ignored and the same visual behavior applied everywhere, or
  2. the selected/visible measurement appeared in the group’s color, and the hidden one was faded just like it would be outside a group.
Anyway, I’m still amazed by the incredible work you’ve done over the years — all the improvements are always welcome and very much appreciated.

The selections on the left choose which measurements are available for display, each gets an entry in the graph legend. The legend checkboxes offer a way to quickly show or hide an individual trace from that set. In principle that's a duplication, but I have retained the checkboxes as some users work with very long lists and scrolling through the list to find the one trace that is to be temporarily turned on or off can be awkward.

I have sometimes seen that only a single measurement gets moved, somehow the individual measurement action gets triggered instead of the action for all the selected measurements. I haven't been able to work out what provokes that though, if you find any way of reliably reproducing it please let me know.

There are some issues with adding measurements to a group from All SPL that I have just fixed for the next build, specifically that the group should be expanded and the measurements should remain selected.

To me, it would make more sense if either:
  1. the group color were ignored and the same visual behavior applied everywhere, or
  2. the selected/visible measurement appeared in the group’s color, and the hidden one was faded just like it would be outside a group.
This comes back to the long lists case. If there are a lot of measurements in a group and the group header is off the screen the measurement's background provides a visual reminder of what group an unselected measurement is in. Option 2 would lead to large areas of the group colour, which could be a bit overwhelming.
