Hi there, I currently have a 7.3 system. The speakers are all Legacy Audio and the subs are PSA (2 T-18’s & 1 S7201) I wish to add 4 overhead speakers for Dolby Atmos duty. The speakers MUST be surface mounted on the ceiling, I cannot cut holes in the ceiling. I have been looking at the Electro-Voice evid 6.2, I like that they can be mounted vertically or horizontally and that they have a very handy mounting bracket. The few reviews I have found seems to be positive.. I am not sure how they will match the legacy’s in timbre. I am also considering he JBL SCS8 or the JBL Control 28.....does anyone have any experience with the evid 6.2 ?..any input would be appreciated

I can not give any advice on the EVs although they make a good product but have you considered the SVS Prime elevation speakers? https://www.svsound.com/products/prime-elevation
They also come with a universal mount for either wall or ceiling mounting.

Thanks for the suggestion, I would be a little concerned that they could keep up with my system and I am thinking that a fixed 20 degree angle might not offer optimum adjustments. The electro’-voice evid 6.2 as well as the JBLS I mentioned have a mounting bracket similar to an outdoor speaker, and would offer lots of flexibility.

I haven't heard any other overhead speakers other than Emotiva at one of the shows, and my MartinLogans that I surface mounted in a box screwed to the ceiling. I don't know that there are a lot of folks that have heard much of any quantities of overhead speakers for the purpose of Atmos comparison, which would probably be fairly difficult to do anyway, from one system and room to another. I would think the EV's would be fine, as they are a very good company... and overhead Atmos speakers are taxed very little. There is really not much to keep up with in any speaker... any overhead speaker should be plenty capable of reproducing what little bit of ambiance sound sent them for Atmos decoding. For that matter... Legacy speakers aren't any "faster" than any other speaker on the market... so you shouldn't have any issues with anything that will work for your mounting purposes.

Yea, I am a complete newbie when it comes to atmos, and I have struggled with whether I need it at all ,however, it seems like most people are glad they did it after the fact. You make a good point about how much content is sent to overhead channels, hopefully there will be more in the future releases. Then I wonder if 7.3.4 is going to make me future proof enough ! Lol I am leaning towards the EVID 6.2’s . Next item is going to be 4 channel amp....it never ends ! Since these are commercial speakers does it make sense to look for a used commercial amp on EBay....Any recommendations. ? ( btw I run separates)

I think it does add to the overall immersive environment ... although it is difficult to pinpoint when there is information coming directly from the speakers, save a helicopter flying over, when it is apparent. Of course we really shouldn't be able to pinpoint any of the speakers... hence the immersive effect... it's just kind of all over you, at least that is how it sounds to me in a 7.4.4 setup.

A home amp will likely sound the same as a commercial amp, especially for overhead speakers... and you won't have the fans to worry with that you normally have in a commercial amp. I have nothing against commercial amps... used them for my subs for years, although I just swapped out subs and don't use them as of about 2 weeks ago. I swapped out the fans in my units. At any rate... I'd look for an inexpensive 5 channel amp (4 channel will be harder to find) to power the overhead speakers. You don't need much, although you might want to find something that matches what you have in cosmetic appearance.

I agree with above ^^
although the SVS speakers would have no issues keeping up with anything you throw at them as Sonnie already mentioned its not alot that goes to them anyhow. As far as an amp have a look at Emotiva they make some decent cost effective multi channel amps

Thanks to Sonnie & Tony for giving their insights into this. I had not thought about the fan noise. The only reason I mentioned commercial amps was because I had read elsewhere that the EVID 6.2 like lots of power to come alive, although they are rated very sensitive at 95db 1w/1m seems like a contradiction ?

Ya, 95db efficient speakers dont need alot of power to come alive, My large EV Studio monitors are the same and I drive them with 300watts per channel and they can get super loud full range without any issues (Ive never come close to clipping the amp).

The ceiling speakers are mostly for an ambient sound … since our ears are pointed directly to the front and the ceiling speakers are down firing, therefore we cannot really hear all the sound coming from the ceiling speakers. So any speakers with good efficiency should do well as a ceiling Sp.
I would make sure the front L/R and center speakers are good speakers and they should be at the same height .. very important.

I've actually used, and measured the Evid 6.2s (for an install in the local Yacht Club here). I'm not sure that I'd recommend them for the purpose you've described. The 4.2s might be a bit better for your application (they have a flatter response down to 100 Hz), but I still found that they were a little on the boomy side (though less so than the 6.2s). Of course, if you have active EQ handy you could address some of their response errors. I suggest trying to get a listen to them first before making the purchase.

My experience with the SVS Prime Elevation speakers, and the company itself, has been extremely positive. I would keep them on the short list of choices.
