(September 22, 2023) Luxman's latest family member features an exotic blend of technologies in what it calls a "single chassis separate." Slotted as a flagship model of the Z-Series, the all-in-one integrated L-509Z carries a suggested retail price of $12,495.

The L-509Z is Luxman's first component to utilize the Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System Version 1.0, or LIFES1.0, in both the power amplifier and preamp sections. Fully independent, these modules are the result of engineering developments used in making the M-10X flagship stereo power amp launched two years ago. According to Luxman, by feeding back only the distorted components generated in the audio signal’s journey to the final amp stage, its proprietary “ODNF” amplification circuitry achieves excellent static characteristics and a natural sound quality as if it were a “non-feedback” system.

Volume control is delivered through Luxman's own precision-based LECUA-EX attenuator system. Of course, any notion of precise volume control begs for a weighty, smooth-turning control knob, and that's exactly what the L-509Z gives its owners. Using a highly precise rotary encoder with a weighted rotation mechanism, operational feel is placed at the forefront of the user experience. Internally, 88 fine steps from 0 to 87dB and an acceleration setting for the speed at which the volume knob is rotated, not to mention a long-press setting for the remote control, allow for comfortable and thorough volume control action with minimal degradation in sound quality. The attenuator system is electronically controlled, independently switching through a series of fixed-value resistors for each channel. These resistors are arranged on the sub-assembly according to the position of the volume control knob. The result is a volume system that minimizes the effects of external vibrations and changes in sound quality across the operating range of the control while remaining resistant to deterioration over time.

Other features include a new phono preamp with switchable gain to accommodate both low-output and high-output moving coil cartridges and completely redesigned tone controls with separate bands for bass, midrange, and treble. You'll also find a 7-segment LED volume level display, a front-panel mute switch, and 12-volt triggers.
