Well I finally made the purchase of 2 Dayton Audio RSS390HO 4ohm drivers that I will be placing in an old EV 6060 box that I removed from an abandoned theater that the previous company that I worked for owned. They should be here in a few days and I will start the build as I need to modify the boxes by adding more bracing and extending the two ports.

See this thread for some pictures and details on discussion on what to do with the boxes as they stand. https://www.avnirvana.com/threads/ev-tl6060dw-subs-can-i-replace-the-drivers-and-tune-deeper.2853/

I will update this thread as I go....

Ok, so cleaned up and painted the cabinets and removed the old EV drivers, ready for the 6" extended ports so I can tune it lower. I want to hit around 15Hz for the tune. I already have a PB13u so ideally matching that is my goal.

For everyone's ease, here is the original spec sheet for the EVs

While Im waiting for the drivers to arrive I have a question, I need to extend the ports as they currently are 6" diameter and only 8" in length so I can help tune the box deeper. Can I use flexible 6" pipe such as the below so I dont have a sharp 90 deg bend or does a sharp band not matter.

a fairly sharp bend doesn't matter. just use a pvc 90 degree extension.

many sub makers like SVS have bends in their ports that go from horizontal to vertical in a sharp curve

Ok, that's easy then, going shopping for the pipe and 90deg elbows tomorrow.

Added some photos to the first above reserved spots

Allrighy I've got the ports extended as much as I can on both sides, one up and one down. I've also upgraded the wire to 12awg inside from the side of the box.

image.jpg

I've also inserted some port flares

image.jpg

Next I installed the drivers into the holes

image.jpg

So, my next question is the original drivers were held in with theses 4 clamps, should I add screws to the other holes to secure the d river better or is that good enough?

Here are the response graphs,

Dayton subs only No EQ

EV sub by its self No EQ.jpg

Notice it reaches down to 10Hz before rolling off however it does not go above 50Hz so the tune os certanly lower than I anticipated however that is not a bad thing once you see everything together.

Here is the sub with EQ

EV with EQ.jpg

And finally the last graph is with my current SVS PB13u and then finally everything including mains.

Subs togeter and mains.jpg

Waterfall graph, sadly I really dont know how to read the waterfall and what to look for so if someone has thoughts feel free.

Hmmm... interesting build Tony. The graph is somewhat unusual I suppose. These are from the listening position?

What EQ are you using for the new subs?

I would be curious to see the response without EQ if you stuff the ports closed.

This is no EQ ports plugged with some rags.

I am using the other spare channel of my Yamaha YDP2006 for EQ.
The mic is at the listening position with the sub at the front of the room (I was just testing it) my plan is to put it in the rear right corner where I have space for it.

That is odd... the response looks the same plugged and unplugged... as if your port is not having any effect on the response. My guess is that room gain is greatly enhancing the low end.

Have you measured it nearfield?

Definitely a low end producer... should be a good sub for those super LFE movies.

Ok, well I did find one issue after placing the sub where I wanted it. I had totally forgotten to bypass the receivers EQ and crossovers when I did the first readings so here are the final readings.

Green line Dayton driver sub, No EQ
Blue everything together with EQ

final reading.jpg

What is interesting is with EQ and everything together it not only looks good but sounds great!
Im not sure the reason for the slow drop of below 20Hz I am wondering if I need to take the SVS and tune it higher and let the daytons take the low end?

In my opinion I would fasten the subs with all the available screw holes and use gasket or putty for piece of mind.
I would bet a dollar they are leaking. Which of course would effect performance, port tune etc.
Of the six I have that I've built in pairs, 1 outta the 2 has leaked.
Mind you mine are sealed so its was easy to check just by pushing on the driver and listen for leaks.

Subs are ported so a small amount of leakage would not really matter but I have added the extra screws to fasten the drivers (made negligible difference in the readings)
