Sure seems like a hard disc media servers would trump a carousel! That's not a world I'm all that familiar with... anyone have their collection on a server?
I have started to build a server for my collection. 40TB raw and about 32TB usable with RAID 5 which should be enough space for a bit over 1,000 movies uncompressed. The ripping process is very time consuming (I have almost 600 blurays) but in the end I think it is worth it for the convenience.
Entire TV series on blu-ray take up an enormous amount of space for a single title and I have toyed with the idea of re encoding some stuff to H.265 to save space.

All my Blurays are ripped to my UnRaid 20T NAS, along with all my music. At this point I am not ripping my 4k though as I haven't found a way to rip them.
There are rumors that someone has figured out how to rip 4K but no details yet on how it was done.

I've built an 32 TB UnRaid server and I've got all of my 850 movies in there. That's not counting TV Shows. I use Plex to stream my movies.

Are your movies ripped uncompressed and when you use plex to stream is it re encoding the video?
I am using an Nvidia Shield running Kodi to stream the uncompressed files from my NAS so there is no loss of quality for audio or video compared to the original blu-ray

I am using an Nvidia Shield running Kodi to stream the uncompressed files from my NAS so there is no loss of quality for audio or video compared to the original blu-ray

I have a few DVD Movies. 95% of my TV Shows are DVD quality with DD or DTS. My BD movies are uncompressed with Atmos, DTS-MA or which ever audio file(s) comes with it.

My main HT uses Plex and it stream uncompressed files. The only time Plex re-encodes anything is when it needs to. For example, my parents HT is pretty old and only plays DD / DTS. So Plex will play the DTS or DD file from Atmos or DTS-MA.

I like Plex GUI better than Kodi. Plex is pretty much run throughout my house. HT, bedrooms' smart TVs. Amazon Fire TV's, families Roku boxes etc.

You have options when ripping the disks. I always rip them uncompressed with the HD audio soundtracks and I play them back directly off the NAS without any re encoding so they are bit for bit exactly the same as the blu-ray.
If you want to save space you can further compress the files and compromise quality which I am not willing to do.
There is also an option to use H.265 codec which is what UHD disks use and that could in theory save space compared to a 1080p bluray without a loss in quality but I have yet to experiment with that.

There no quality loss. Mine plays just like a BD would play without all of the previews.

The only time I have audio issues is with Atmos. I've had a few movies with audio drops.

The same audio drops where present when playing from the physical BD.

I have over a thousand dvds and maybe 25 to 30 blu ray discs. I would like to have a NAS one day in the future.. All of the dvds are in albums collecting dust. I got most of my dvds when I was younger and as I grow older, I buy less and less. I mostly stream now via Amazon prime, netflix, as well as hulu plus.

Disk are becoming obsolete. I only buy movies that have a rating of 6.0 or high from IMBD / Rottentomatoe sites. Then I add them to my server. Usually my wife will eventually start selling them again. I had a lot of DVD's and BD's in my garage. My wife started selling them all to make more space.

I agree. My plan is one day in the future is to add all of my dvds to a server. I just don't know how to build one or how to set one up. One day..

The reason I have so many is that I used to collect all the Oscar winners so I have just about every movie that won something and then I also started to collect all of the various movies that were identified within the NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY database and then of course top anime movies.. :)
