Yamaha Becomes the Next Big Name to Host Auro-3D Technology

(May 20, 2021) Marantz and Denon are no longer the only large-scale brands to offer Auro-3D in the North American market. Today, Auro Technologies has announced its platform will be available on select Yamaha 2021 AVENTAGE AV Receivers.

According to Auro, Yamaha’s 11-channel RX-A8A and 9-channel RX-A6A receivers will offer access to Auro's Codec decoder and the Auro-Matic up-mixer.

"Auro Technologies is thrilled to see AURO-3D becoming enabled on the newest YAMAHA AV receivers. This announcement signifies another major milestone for the expansion of AURO-3D into more Home Entertainment devices and YAMAHA’s commitment to expand the availability of AURO-3D,” said Rudy Van Duppen, CEO of Auro Technologies. “AURO-3D brings to customers the truest to real-life immersive experiences for the Home.”

Auro’s largest stumbling block within the United States has been access to content. Users can source Auro Blu-ray films from Europe, however, the bulk of Auro’s usefulness has been playback of Auro-encoded music and upmixxing of legacy and multi-channel movie content.

Any idea when the next Yamaha preamp will be coming out with Auro3d? I am about to get the JBL Sdp55 and this would save me a ton of money! I also would not need to sell my DDRC88As, but I could save space with the JBL.. Both ow have 5yea4 warranties too.

I’ve not heard anything... but I’m talking to Yamaha today. I’ll see if I can get an answer for you.

@NBPK402 No plans to release a pre-amp this year... it doesn't sound like 10.1 with a VOG is possible with the current AVR offerings.

While they aren't saying they're releasing a new processor this year... it's not outside the realm of possibility that they could inject last year's model with Auro. I have a web call set up with Yamaha in a few weeks. If I hear anything that I can pass along, I will.

Is Auro-3D being adopted widely? Similar to Dolby Atmos, are there contents being produced for Auro-3D?

From what I understand it is widespread in Europe, some new cars have Auro3d, and some theaters in the USA have Auro3d. I only have kne Bluray which has Auro3d, and I bought it from the UK. I have not heard it yet, but I have a friend who loves Auro3d on his setup. He also said music sounds great with Auro3d. I setup my heights to do Auro3d and Atmos. My next preamp will have Auro3d and the VOG channel.

The processing chips Yamaha is using in these new receivers are so powerful, they were left with lots of room for various technologies... they decided to add Auro. The decision wasn't made to appeal to the US market, but Europe and Asia. Of course, North American customers get the benefit.

I have Auro in my set up... native Auro encoded video content is spectacular. Unfortunately, it's near impossible to find in the US. Native Auro encoded music is also spectacular, but the number of artists using it is limited (and the music is far from mainstream). Auro upmixing is quite excellent for movies... and AuroMatic/Auro-2D upmixing of music is by far the best stereo to multichannel upmixer on the market (IMO). It leaves the soundstage intact while giving a bump to spaciousness. Neat effect.

I just watched a video on Youtube and learned something about Dolby Atmos and Auro3d. Auro 3d actially was the first on the market, and the reason Dolby has to aim its heights is actually because it would violated Auro 3ds paten5 if they did not.
