Not all AV streamers are created equal.

I’ve compared Apple TV4K to Roku Ultra, Amazon Fire TV Cube, and NVIDIA Shield Pro. While each has strengths, Apple TV4K ($140 on Amazon) is the one I recommend with the Essence HDMI DACs because it delivers the best overall combination of speed, stability, picture quality, sound quality, and user experience. Apple TV4K uses the A15 Bionic chip, supports HDMI v2.0 & v2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, and offers up to 128GB storage with Gigabit Ethernet on the higher-capacity model.

Why it stands out:

  • Fast and fluid: Apps load quickly, navigation feels instant, and the interface is polished and consistent.
  • Clean experience: No cluttered home screen full of sponsored content competing for your attention.
  • Premium A/V platform: Excellent support for modern 4K UHD video and 24/48K Hi Res Audio formats.
  • Component-quality performance: Apple TV4K feels like a real A/V component, not just a cheap streaming gadget — the kind of quality-minded design audiophiles will appreciate.
  • The best fit for Essence: It pairs beautifully with the HDACC II-4K 2 channel or Evolve II-4K 7.1 channel HDMI DACs as a serious modern HDMI source for music, concerts, movies, and TV.
Bottom line:
Roku Ultra is a strong value choice. Fire TV Cube offers useful features for Alexa users. NVIDIA Shield Pro remains popular with enthusiasts and local-media users. But for most Essence customers, Apple TV4K is the best all-around AV streamer and the one most likely to deliver the kind of refined, component-quality performance that complements a high-performance audio system. Tom’s Guide highlights the Apple TV 4K’s faster app loading and especially clean interface compared with rivals.

No Kal. My HDMI DACs do not decode or render Dolby Atmos. They output the program as the uncompressed original LPCM studio version with no post-processing, no steering, and no EQ. Atmos is an object-based format that requires an Atmos-capable processor to interpret the metadata and create the height effects. My design goal is different: preserve the signal path and deliver the core audio cleanly, simply, and directly, without embellishments.

Watching Rays / Pirates on Apple TV+ tonight reminds me why this matters — live baseball in 4K can look spectacular when the source is right. And yes — baseball is one of the best demos for 4K. The grass texture, dirt, uniforms, depth of field, and the sheer geometry of the ballpark all benefit. When the production is done right, it has that “you are there” quality people notice immediately.

Been a fan of Apple TV 4K for several years.

I also have Roku Ultra, I have Fire TV Cube, and I have NVIDIA Shield Pro... all three in the cabinet.

Thanks, Sonnie. That means a lot, especially since you’ve lived with all four in the same system. That kind of direct comparison is exactly why I wrote the post. On paper they all have strengths, but in actual use the Apple TV4K keeps striking me as the most refined, most consistent, and most component-like of the group.

I’m similar to Sonnie… we’ve had Roku Ultras and a Fire Cube. Currently have 6 Apple TV 4K spread across our home.

The Ultras were OK. But nothing compares to the feel and operation of the Apple TV.

I’m completely wrapped into the entire Apple ecosystem, so that probably helps. But the control interface and overall PQ derived from the Apple is impossible to argue with. Plus, I love being able to use my phone as a remote.

Nice write up Bob!

Thanks for your contribution to this thread Todd. This is one of the most common questions I get so I decided to put my thoughts in writing for all to see here and on my site to answer the questions before they come my way. Your comment adds authority to the conclusion that its the best choice, everybody will appreciate that. And thanks for the kind words too. :) Judging from the number of views its received since I posted it on Saturday, a lot of AVNIRVANA members are curious too.
