The Long and the Short of It

How is your power amp / speaker interface configured? Why?

(a) Short Interconnects / Long Speaker Cable, or​

(b) Long Interconnects / Short Speaker Cable.​

There are many opinions on the web, with what seems like minimum science. Should I worry about it, or configure the system in the most convenient way?

Short interconnects and long speaker cable. Because the amps are in the receiver and not all over the room.

Would it make any difference if I told you this was for a dual-purpose room for 2channel listening and movies?

I ask because I may need to run my A/V system through my analog preamp’s HT Bypass function. It’s a passive design that works by switching a pair of line level signals (such as the LF/RF one’s from a pre-pro) to the preamp’s output whenever the unit is powered-down.

With the 2CH system linked to the HT system in that way, the left and right monoblocks can be positioned either next to the mains, or next to the preamp (over in an equipment closet). Since we’re talking distances on the order of 30 feet, I wondered if good quality unbalanced interconnects would be good enough. The analog preamp has no balanced connections.

So you want to keep your monoblocks next to the main speakers. I would be sure to use shielded RCA as a precaution.

I personally like the idea of 30ft of speaker cables versus having the amps plugged into a different circuit than the other equipment and having to run 30ft RCA cords.

What brand speaker cable do you like? Since I no longer fall for snake-oil, I’m at a loss for a go-to brand. I know Monoprice builds good cables. Blue Jeans is supposedly better for certified HDMI and CAT 5/6. I wound up with generic Mobater Cable for the runs to my surrounds.

Can’t recommend a specific brand as it’s been probably more than 20 years since I bought any speaker wire. I typically look for something 12-14 ga. oxygen-free.
