Testing the Sound Blaster X7 vs Mother board built in audio

How can I compare the built in audio compared to the Sound Blaster X7 ? What sort of cables and settings do I need?

Just a loopback cable from audio output to audio input. To accurately measure distortion use the stepped sine measurement on the RTA window, it takes a long time if you use many points per octave but has very low noise floor.

Loopback cable is basically 3.5 mm male -> 3.5 mm male...correct?

Yes, make sure it is a stereo cable.
