Hello:
I replaced the foam ring on the original drivers when they wore out but the sub doesn't sound the same :( . It tends to clip/shudder when loud LFE play. I am now wondering if I can replace the drivers with something like "Dayton Audio UM12-22 12" Ultimax DVC Subwoofer 2 Ohms Per Coil" or Eminence Lab 12C High Power 12" Subwoofer Speaker Driver 4 Ohm. Would it work? Has anyone here done anything like this with good results?

The specs of the subwoofer are as follows:
POWER OUTPUT: 400 watts RMS
AMPLIFIER DISTORTION: Less than 0.03% from 20 to 125 Hz at full output into subwoofer drivers
INPUT IMPEDANCE: 15 Kohms
NOISE: better than -90 dB relative to full output
TYPICAL ROOM RESPONSE: 20 - 200 Hz ± 2 dB (THX position)
ANECHOIC RESPONSE. 18 - 125 Hz ± 2 dB (Anechoic position)
DIMENSIONS (H x W x D): 23 1/4" x 15 1/2" x 26" (MX-5000 Mk II)
WEIGHT: 105 lbs.

The sub is a push-pull design and uses two 12", 4-ohm drivers.

What do you guys think? Doable?

Thanks!

Have you checked with M&K about replacement drivers?

Otherwise I think it might be difficult to find drivers with the correct parameters to match up, so you may not know what you are getting in that box of chocolates.

I tried but got no response from them :(

Reach out to Ken Kreisel and see if he has any suggestions, or perhaps he could design you one... he'd likely know.

I had seen you had suggest the same to someone else some time back. I sent Ken an email a few months back but he did not reply. I sent him one just now. Hope he replies.

I hear a lot of good things about SVS and have been looking into them as well. If I can't find a way to repair the ones I have I might add a couple of SVS subs. I contacted them and they suggested supplementing them with PB-1000 Pros since they are close to the power output of my current subs and are also ported. Although, I think the MX5000s are closer to a sealed sub as they employ the push-pull design.
decisions, decisions... :)
