(March 1, 2023) Sony entered 2023 riding high on the success generated by its heralded crop of 2022 OLED TV models. So, it's no surprise the company has, once again, slotted Samsung Display's QD-OLED panels for use in its flagship offerings.
The flagship OLED Bravia XR A95L line will ship in three sizes – 77", 65", and 55" – each using the latest generation of QD-OLED panels manufactured by Samsung Displays. Unlike WOLED panels made by LG Display, QD-OLED panels take advantage of color enhancing Quantum Dot technology and the results are eye-popping. This year's models are getting a massive boost in brightness thanks to Sony's XR Triluminos Max technology. The company says owners should experience better color performance with approximately 200% more brightness than last year's models.
The step-down OLED Bravia XR A80L line use LG Display's W-OLED panel technology, adding one model size larger as compared to the A95L series (an 83" class TV that measures 82.5" diagonal). To enhance performance, Sony is reaching for its XR OLED Contrast Pro and XR Triluminos Pro technologies to boost brightness approximately 110% compared to the previous year's model - the A80K.
All seven of Sony's OLED TVs are compatible with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced, and work with Sony's 360 Spatial Sound Mapping (360SSM) for a more immersive audio experience. Like previous years, the entire screen is a speaker, as Acoustic Surface Audio+ uses actuators that vibrate to produce sound from the screen. And for further audio enhancement, Acoustic Center Sync allows the TV speakers to synchronize with select Sony soundbars to reinforce the center speaker channel for clearer, fuller dialogue and more immersive sound.
Beyond the company's OLED models, the Bravia XR line has a complete line of LCD TVs divided into three different series. The X95L line comprises a single 85" model. It uses mini-LED backlighting, Sony's Cognitive Processor XR, and XR Backlight Master Drive to control thousands of tiny, ultra-dense mini-LEDs with precision and independence, delivering extraordinary brightness, impressive dynamic range, deep blacks and beautifully natural colors.
The step-down mini-LED X93L line expands upon size offerings (85", 75", and 65"), but doesn't offer the advantages of advanced backlighting control. And the X90L lineup offers those sizes in addition to a 55" and 98" model, with brightness handled by a full array LED backlighting.
All 2023 BRAVIA XR TVs allow gamers to take their PlayStation 5 gaming to the next level with exclusive features, including Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode, for optimized picture quality while gaming and streaming. Other features include an easy-to-use Game Menu where gamers can tailor their settings to their preferences, such as turning on or off VRR or Motion Blur Reduction with quick access. The Game Menu also allows users to increase the brightness in dark areas to easily spot objects and opponents with the Black Equalizer and can easily take aim on their opponents with six types of crosshairs. New this year is the ability to customize the size of the screen with the Screen Size feature to concentrate gaming with a smaller, focused screen. The A95L line also features Multi-View, where owners can watch walk-throughs and gameplay guides side-by-side while simultaneously playing their favorite titles.
Sony says its new TV models should begin hitting stores this spring. Pricing and availability will be announced soon.
