Hi, I just joined today. Not a whiz on electronics so hopefully this site will be able to help me out.
I have been trying to decide on a new Sony 75" TV. The specs on the new 900F has just been released, but I don't think any reviews have been done yet. I was about ready to get the XBR75X900E, but really wanted the extra feature of the 940E, Dolby Vision and the Extreme X1 chip, but not the price. Also, I noticed that the 900E was rated better for "motion" than the 940E. So the new 2018 XBR75X900F has been announced which has the X1 Extreme chip, Dolby Vision and a 6x brighter HDR, but I don't know if the "motion" will be the same or better than the 900E. I'm not sure which spec would control that feature, any ideas?
Thanks, AnalysisP

New is usually always better but it comes with a price! The best thing you can do at this point is to wait until there are some reviews out on the 900F to gauge how much better it will be than the 900E and if that justifies the increase in cost.

It's impossible to know if motion is going to be better between the 900E and 900F, but I'd hazard to guess that the overall picture quality will be noticeably better. You're really looking at refresh rates (which will probably spec to be the same)... but the 900F does have a slightly better image processor and a new technology Sony is calling X-Motion Clarity, which amounts to some kind of frame interpolation process that incorporates controlling luminance. I wish I could give you some in-depth technical breakdown, but I can't.

Even if you call the difference between the two to be a tie... it does appear that the 900F has newly implemented HDR technologies meant to enhance the HDR experience. I highly doubt that translates to 6X greater peak brightness... I'd imagine there's some wordsmith happening in Sony's marketing literature.

Perhaps we can @Robert Zohn to chime in. @AnalysisP, Robert owns a highly regarded specialty TV shop. He'll likely have some insights!

On paper the 900f is going to be better but as the above comments by Todd and Mech said you could wait and see if any reviews appear or contact Robert to get his insight.

Sony has always had great displays and I'm sure it will live up to expectations

The big upgrade we'll see with Sony's X900F series will be the very highly regarded X1 Extreme processor and what Todd mentioned, X Motion Clarity. As the OP, AnalysisP also stated only X1 Extreme equipped processor TVs will get the Dolby Vision HDR upgrade.

We do not know what upgrades to expect from the 2018 VA Full Array back-lit panel, but it's speculated to be brighter than the current X900E series.

At CES I was told end of February launch for 55", 65" and 75" X900F, but it may be slightly later.

Better processor... likely brighter... I think it would make sense to wait for the 900F if —- IF —- you’re planning on watching lots of 4K HDR material.

If this is a TV that you’re likely to unbox and watch mostly standard HD, then it buying last year’s model is a good option.

I just upgraded my DVR with a new Sony UBD 800X which has the Dolby vision, Atmos and 4K-ultra HDR, so I need to upgrade my TV to match. Also, my older Sony KDL X500 60" has very good motion and watching the football during the SB game was great, I don't want to lose that.

Well, if you're gearing up for 4K, then a new TV is a must ;-).

I completely understand your interest in making sure motion continues to look smooth... and I don't believe you'll experience any kind of negative drop-off with the 900F model. If anything, it's advanced X1 processor will lead to noticeably better image quality.

If motion is a big concern, I'd highly recommend checking out Sony and LG's OLED television models. Have you considered them?

Thanks, Yes I did but the price really climbs at the 75"-77" size.

Yup, it definitely does... I can understand keeping within a budget. Keep tabs with @Robert Zohn, he'll have pretty immediate info about the 900F once it becomes available.

We were just allocated the very first shipments of 55", 65" and 75" X900Fs! Shipping February 22nd.

Also included in this allotment are 65" and 75" X850Fs.

On our TV Shootout wall I'll be mounting a 75X900F next to our 75X940E and 75X900E.

Is it going to be in NYC again or at your store? And what are the dates? I am retired (somewhat) now so I may be able to swing it.

Although I've been working hard on many of the 2018 TV Shootout details the one undecided item is the exact date and location. If we take it back to our showroom I like to schedule the event when all of the flagship models are available, which will likely be sometime in late May. If we partner with CE Week again it will June 20-21, 2018.
