Sony Confirms PlayStation 5 Will Support 4K UHD Blu-ray Playback

full?d=1570583185.jpg

(October 8, 2019) Earlier today, Sony’s President & CEO (Jim Ryan) released a PlayStation 5 update, linking to an exclusive article published by WIRED Magazine online. In the update, Ryan said the forthcoming console is on schedule to launch prior to the Holidays 2020, and included several technical details about a new controller design. The new controller will replace Sony’s traditional rumble feedback technology with a more nuanced “haptic” feedback system. The result will be broadly different tactile responses to what’s happening during a game. Ryan also says that the L2/R2 trigger buttons will be “adaptive,” allowing designers to program sensations of resistance specific to items used within a game.

According to WIRED, the PlayStation 5 will house a functional 4K Blu-ray player that also serves as an optical drive for 100-GB optical game discs. This is huge news for gamers that have longed for a PlayStation console that can also playback 4K movies.

For more detail, read Sony’s letter with an embedded WIRED link, below.

An Update on Next-Gen: PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020
Jim Ryan President & CEO, SIE

Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.

These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in a story that posted this morning.

The “more” refers to something I’m quite excited about – a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller. First, we’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.

While there’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I’d like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games.

I can’t wait to pick this up. Hopefully it serves well as a stand alone 4K player. That’s my justification to the wife anyway. :whistling:

I’m definitely on the buy list for this, too. It’s going to be awesome, little doubt about it.

But will you be able to control it with standard remote signals or is it still going to be antiquated Bluetooth control....you know for those who would intigrate it into there home theaters automation.

I don’t think we’ll know until release.... more than likely, it won’t integrate with automation.

I believe PS4 is HDR10 only... I haven't seen any information about what HDR standards will be supported on the 5. One would have to imagine HDR10+, for sure. Their TVs support Dolby Vision, so likely that too?

The only Dolby Vision player out there is the Oppo, right? I've briefly looked into this but never saw any other compatible players. Maybe Dolby Vision is still way off in the future or something?

I believe the 820/9000 players for Panasonic are also DV.

Sony has their own Movie Studios...why would they come out with the PS5 playing 4k discs if they were going away?
The writing is on the wall. Sony might see it to its end but....

Well I hope you are wrong... I think they are just trying to shove streaming down our throats to save themselves more money, and cost us more by paying more for Internet. The Cable Companies are because people are dropping the tv channels to stream, but at the same time know that if we are forced to stream they will make even more money from us. The industry also doesn't like the fact that used media is being resold... because they think the ones buying the media used would be buying it new. They forget that the ones who are buying the media are the high end users who want the best product and streaming just doesn't cut it.
Time will tell, but I sure hope streaming flops and they have no choice but to keep media.

In terms of whether physical media or streaming will be the go to for end consumers especially, for gamers, it is clearly streaming..

Take a look at the below.

from statista,

25920

"In 2018, a record 83 percent of all computer and video games were sold in digital form, meaning that, once the game is downloaded, it is immediately ready to play. In contrast, only 17 percent of video games were sold in physical form. "

"The digital gaming industry is a continually growing market. The number of gamers playing downloaded games in the United States is expected to grow from 170 million in 2017 to 174.4 million in 2023, and similar growth is expected for mobile and online games. In the same timeframe, the revenue generated from downloaded games is due to increase from just under four billion U.S. dollars to over 4.3 billion U.S. dollars. "

That is for gamers...not 4k movies though. I think the computer industry is going to take a hit if it goes to streaming only as the computers are what is being used to save the movies to their hard drives... hence people have 20, 30, 50, 100tb hdds. If there is no more physical media it will stifle the HDD sales, and the quantity of drives will not be sold, and the prices will stay high instead of coming down. Just my 2 cents.

In regards to movies, streaming is also the future just as it is for gamers..

Per arstechnica,

"In its annual Theatrical Home Entertainment Market Environment report, the Motion Picture Association of America described an immensely sharp drop-off of physical media sales over the past five years. According to the data, which was obtained from DEG and IHS Markit, global sales of video disc formats (which in this context means DVD, Blu-ray, and UltraHD Blu-ray) were $25.2 billion in 2014 but only $13.1 in 2018. That's a drop in the ballpark of 50 percent. "

25925

"Home entertainment spending grew 16 percent in 2018 thanks to surges in consumer spending on digital video services from players like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu.

The global number of subscriptions to online streaming services grew 27 percent to 613.3 million in 2018, surpassing cable subscriptions (at 556 million) for the first time ever."

I personally, love physical media but it is easy to see that eventually, everything will be streaming. May take some time but it will happen as each year physical media declines...

Also, in regards to hdd (hard drive). They are also going down.. Coincidence??

nidec_predictions_hdd.png

from anandtech,

"According to Nidec's data, unit sales of hard drives declined by around 43% from 2010 to 2018, going from around 650 million units in 2010 to 375 million units in 2018. And it looks like sales will continue to drop in the coming years. Recently Nidec revised its HDD shipment forecast downwards from 356 million drives to 309 million drives in 2019, which will further drop to 290 million units in 2020. "

"According to Nidec, shipments of PC HDDs decreased gradually from 289 million drives in 2013 to 124 million devices in 2018. However, this year sales of hard drives for PCs will drop sharply, going from 124 million devices in 2018 to 65 million units in 2019, or by around 48%. "

Media on discs will never die in my opinion. It may become a niche market though. Example ....records. Records were replaced with 8 tracks, then tapes, then cd, then digital players, and now streamed. And after all this a decent niech market emerged of individuals going back to records....new record stores opening...the real evidence is the industries wilingness to go back to producing the music in a record format....not an industry easy to persuade, there must be money in it.
I believe we will see a similar pattern/journey over time with Disc based movies...a decline..to a re-emerging of a niche market. After all we went from VHS to laser disc to DVD to Blu-ray to 4K......how else will the industry get 8k media to the hands of those purchasing 8k devices? This in itself because of limited means of distribution (8k video) and major industries involved in the sale of devices intended for use with said video media will greatly slow if not prevent the killing off, of said media. I think the killing of Media video discs will be less drastic than the predecessor Media music discs. Rather than it being killed of and re-emerge later down the road as a niche, it will likely just move toward a niche market directly. Perhaps an indication of this is what appears to be an increased retail price of newly released media video discs.
