Select Definitive Technology and Polk Audio Speakers Receive IMAX Enhanced Certification

(November 17, 2020) IMAX Enhanced, a collaboration between DTS and IMAX, is a recent certification program designed to deliver home theater content featuring IMAX's "signature picture, sound, and scale." The complete experience requires certified gear playing 4K HDR video created using IMAX's Digital Media Remastering (DMR) process, audio encoded with a variant of DTS:X immersive audio, and source film shot with IMAX- cameras or certified for use in IMAX theaters. Up until today, IMAX had only applied its Enhanced certification to receivers and displays. Now, we can add several speaker models to the list.

Definitive Technology's Demand Series and Polk Audio's Legend Series are the first to offer IMAX Enhanced floorstanding and center channel speakers. Featured models include Definitive's Demand D17, D15, and D5c, and Polk's Legend L800, L600, and L400 speakers. According to Sound United, more product lines within its brand portfolio will be announced soon.

"Our intent in joining the loudspeaker certification program was to reproduce the signature IMAX sound without compromise. It was essential to preserve the impact and dynamics moviegoers have come to expect from IMAX, therefore, we considered sound pressure level (SPL), frequency response and the consistency of the speaker's performance when evaluating eligibility for loudspeaker certification," said Matt Lyons, VP of Engineering – Acoustics Product Development & Engineering at Polk Audio. "IMAX defined a specific set of frequency ranges to be used for testing, which we then ultimately measured against speaker performance. The resulting certification completes the ecosystem of IMAX Enhanced products including content, devices and loudspeakers, all calibrated to offer the level of performance IMAX demands."

I have. Well, I’ve demoed it with the 4K film Journey to the South Pacific (used in conjunction with a Denon X8500H).

I was not seeing IMAX Enhanced from a video perspective (my JVC projector isn’t capable), but I’ve heard it.

It sounded great. Immersive. But, was it any better than a great DTS:X, Auro-3D, or Atmos encode? I can’t say I head a difference. I’ve also heard it in action at some industry events... I had the same reaction: sounds fabulous, but it doesn’t sound distinctly better than anything else I’ve heard in the upper end of Immersive Sound presentations.

I do have Bad Boys For Life on hand, which is also IMAX Enhanced, but haven’t watched it yet!

Dolby got out of the gates fast... we'll see if that lasts!

I haven't really heard much about it. Atmos and Auro have been heavily discussed, but IMAX... just not much at all. I haven't been to a movie theater in 20+ years, and then it was not a high-end theater. I think I took our daughter Chelsea to see Dinosaur back in 2000 maybe... she was 10.

I'm not seeing much about it with the high-end processors like the HTP-1, X9, Emotiva, Trinnov, Storm, etc... or at least not much mention about it if they support it.

IMAX Enhanced is or will be supported by them all. Only actual IMAX films were available in it during 2019... but major motion pictures are starting to be released on disc with it.

i think we’re still in a wait-and-see holding pattern to judge how impactful it will ultimately be.

So it is similar to Dolby... it has to be encoded into the film.
