Samsung’s Bombshell Q900F 8K Reveal Makes Your 4K TV Seem... Old
(Samsung) Samsung's all-new Q900F 8K television(August 30, 2018) Sound the sirens, alert the neighbors… hide your kids. Samsung just threw down the AV gauntlet at IFA 2018, officially unveiling the company’s first commercially available 8K television. And it’s a big one, measuring 85” diagonal, loaded with 4X the number of pixels found on your (now) outdated 4K television. And if you’re still clinging to your aging plasma, that makes for 16X the number of pixels found on a standard 1080p television.
Yes, the new future is here.
Of course, it’s common knowledge that more pixels do not instantly equate to a better viewing experience. Yes, the closer you stand to a high-resolution TV, the more impressive pixel counts become. But videophiles know that other factors, including black levels, contrast, and enhancements provided by High Dynamic Range and wide color gamut – not to mention onboard processing capabilities – are what really drive a modern eye-pleasing show.
The newly minted QLED Q900FN 8K TV appears to be loaded with plenty of interesting tech. Topping the list is the ability to reach a whopping 4,000 nits of peak brightness (notably, 6,000 nits shy of Sony’s prototype 8K television showcased at CES 2018), onboard advanced HDR10+ processing, and an AI-powered 8K Quantum Processor capable of upscaling lesser resolutions for 8K viewing. Add to that Direct Full Array Elite backlighting (no edge lighting) and full coverage of the DCI/P3 color space, and you have a package that looks quite impressive on paper.
Samsung says its “One Remote” technology allows the TV to recognize and analyze a number of different connective devices, automatically switching the TV’s image source and audio output for optimal viewing. Also, an “Ambient Mode” allows the Q900FN to blend into its surrounding space, showcasing images, news, and other information. And its “One Invisible Connection” delivers 5m to 15m of dual optical cable and power into one unassuming cord.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but if you’re interested you best start saving your pennies. There’s little doubt this set will carry nothing less than a premium price tag.
The Samsung Q900F is expected to start shipping in the United States during October 2018.
