Hi all, I’m new to the site so I’m hoping I get this question directed in the right forum here!

So if I have a viewing distance of 16.4 feet from my 128 inch wide(139” diagonal) 2.35:1 cinema screen, using a 7.2 format. If the room is 12.5 feet wide, what should the recommended distance behind me be?

Using the above mentioned, If I went with a 5.2.2 format would the distance behind me differ?

Not for surround speaker placement reasons. Just stick as close as possible to Dolby’s recommendation.

Why have you chosen to sit that distance from the screen?

I used 16.4 feet because that is the recommended THX seating distance from a 139” diagonal Cinemascope screen.
Mind you I have yet to initiate my home theatre room construction so it’s not built yet!

But I was wondering what the recommended distance behind the viewer is recommended

I haven’t seen any recommended behind distance for 5.2.2. Maybe someone else has though. If there was one, @Todd Anderson would know.
When using surround back speakers you would want some space there and then there’s the issue of boomy bass if sitting along the back wall.

How long is the room? Do you have the screen already?
I think you want to be closer for THX 40° and many seem to prefer closer still. @Matthew J Poes is recommending somewhere in the 50s iirc.
(found a recent video where he talks about it. )

I haven’t looked at it, but I think closer might also help with the front stage speaker angles (on the Dolby link above). Closer also helps with how loud your speakers can get, i.e dynamic range, if that would matter with what you’ll be using.

I have yet to construct the room, but I’m thinking around 19 feet long X 13 feet wide
I have purchased a screen, Cinemascope 2.35:1 (135” diagonal)

I forgot to mention that I chose that distance as a maximum parameter if I were to zoom out the image to fill the entire screen edge to edge(anamorphic lens), so 16.4 feet is the recommended viewing distance if you filled out your entire 135 inch screen. So I can always lessen the viewing distance once I decide my comfort level.

I would place the screen a little further away from the sofa to fully cover the field of view.
