This issue was tracked down to a DC offset in the measurement data, a fix for that condition has been included in the next beta.

Every time I download a new beta version (and there have been quite a few for the last years...), as a precaution, I also download the included version of Java (even if it's not necessarily useful) and I don't have a problem.
Not being a developer, I don't need Java on my pc. The included version is enough.
