I am fairly new to using REW but finding I need to be super careful and save very file before unplugging anything. If I dont the programme hangs and I have no option to force quit. I lost about 40 measurements on Sunday and today my 20 or so measurements are on REW but its just hanging any ideas ?

Sure, lots ( ideas ? )

Your version of Mac OS isn't compatible with the REW version that you're running /// also your USB sound-card is just too old and is no longer supported by Apple/Mac .

:)

Alas good thoughts... but the Macbook is 4 weeks old, running the latest software the latest REW and the sound card is whatever they fit in the 16" MacBook Pro's which I doubt is unsupported

What is it you are unplugging that is causing problems?

You can look in or compress and attach) the REW log files folder to see if anything relevant has been captured:

REW saves diagnostic logs in the user's home directory, the location is displayed in the Help -> About REW window. The logs contain information from the last 10 startups, including any error messages or warnings that may have been generated. On macOS the logs are in the user library folder, which no longer appears in Finder by default. To display it either browse to ~/Library/Logs or open your Home folder in Finder (Shift Command + H), select View > Show View Options then select the checkbox to show the library folder.

You didn't mention what you are unplugging. From the errors that were logged I'm guessing you are using a UMM-6 USB mic that was unplugged at some point, and an HDMI connection (perhaps via an adaptor) to the system for output. None of the errors captured would cause REW to hang though, just show an error dialog about the selected input or output not being available or not offering the requested line type. Perhaps a dialog waiting for acknowledgement got stuck behind another window? Difficult to say, your descriptions are a bit light on detail.

John, hi

Thank for looking, the equipment is a 16" MacBook Pro with two USBc cables connected via adapters to a HDMI cable to the processor and a USB UMM-6 USB mic. I am using an Acurus ACT4 processor and trying to dial in 3 subs and a 5.3.0 system. in the process of moving to 7.3.0, but won't be able to run any ceiling speakers in this set up

quite possible about the acknowledgement point I'll double check as I run two screen downstairs so often have more open than I might when just using the laptop !

That might account for the odd display DPI figures reported when REW starts up, it sometimes shows 3048 (!) DPI, other times 108 DPI. and sometimes 132 DPI. Probably safest to only use REW on your primary display.

Looks like I am having some Problems without removing connections, I had been looking at data this morning and it has crashed when using other programmes. I am a little lazy with closing down programmes but that the reason I have an 8 Core i9 with 32 GB of RAM so I don't need to close and reopen :) . Here is a screen grab before I forced quit

Meaning it wasn't responding after you returned to it from doing something else? Can attach the zipped REW log folder and I'll look through that to see if there are any clues.

Do you run any window managers or the like such as BetterTouchTool, Magnet Window Manager, Moom or QuicKeys? The installer had issues when those were running but haven't come across any issues with REW itself.

PS the displays are 5120 x 2880 (2 of) and the 3072 x 1920 9 (Macbook Pro), perhaps some graphics challenge ?

How much memory was REW allocated when you ran the installer? 1GB or 2GB?

Hmmm, a good question I would have left to the default I suspect, can I easily check ?

I also dont run any windows manager programs

It will be in the roomeqwizard.vmoptions file in the REW application folder, there will be a line with -Xmx = 2048M for 2GB. Or just rerun the installer.

For the potential cause of the hang the REW logs folder is the best chance of finding a potential cause, but I'm not overly optimistic. If there was a memory problem it will have been logged.

I have reloaded and now set to 2 GB, the default was 1 GB, I'll see if this is any better. I am now in the habit of saving each plot after I have named so probably good practice in any case !

Adrian ?

You might want to close all apps > reboot > re-open apps while keeping an eye on the 2 areas I've underlined ( from your Memory-Management pic ) .

Re-Open REW early in the list of apps to be re-opened .

Mac_Memory-Management_.PNG

You might find that REW runs better if you keep those 2 ( underlined ) areas to smaller values.

:)

I should have ordered 64 GB  or I guess work a little tidier, a bit annoying as the laptop was £4.5k !

Shouldn't really be the cause of REW not responding though, it runs happily on computers with pretty modest resources.

Definitely something odd going on, it may be my installation causing issues but it crashed again last night when moving from the cinema room to the study. The later MacBooks only have thunderbolt connections, so I use USBc to HDMI and USBc to USBa adapters then down stairs two thunderbolt cables to two 5k screens, seems that the disconnection and reconnection is part of the problem, having said that it has crashed in the office with no disconnections

I save every test file now so nothing lost last night :)

Observed something similar, macOS 10.15.5 and REW 5.20 beta 56. With REW open, disconnecting the HDMI cable causes REW to hang / not-responding. Please let me know what additional info/logs you would like

My software does crash when my laptop goes to sleep or I switch my AV processor between inputs when connected. I save before I do anything then just reload. Its very frequent for me

I have changed REW's behaviour for the next beta. It will save a temporary copy of each measurement when it is made (in the log files folder in a sub-folder called temp). On a normal shutdown those temporary copies will be deleted, if REW did not shut down normally it will warn of the existence of the temporary files on the next startup and offer to load them.
