REW And ESI Juli@ Soundcard

AlleyCatCT from Cape Town, South Africa ( introduction & question together).

I have used REW successfully in the past on a bigger stereo rig : Pathos Logos ( as a preamp), Mark Levinson 431 power amp. B & W Nautilus 802 speakers. 3 subwoofers - 2 x B &W PV1's and a Velodyne 1000R, coupled to an Velodyne SMS-1 Active X-Over. Meridian 500 transport, Denafrips Ares Dac, Audio GD Reclocker, and ESI Juli@ soundcard /JRiver via RCA 75 Ohm digital interconnect. Dedicated, acoustically treated music room ( 27ft x 21 ft room).

My AV side is secondary, sorted and of little interest to this thread.

Today, I am in smaller home, although the listening space is 30x 15 sq/ft, my speakers are Vivid B1's, Pathos Classic Remix as preamp (valve input stage) and Modwright Instruments KWA 100 power amp, the same sources as above. The speakers are virtually just over 9ft from the front wall, 3 ft from the side walls and 9ft apart. I listen to any type of
(good music), mainly jazz of all forms.

Reason for being specifically here today, beyond other things :

I have downloaded REW to my desktop that houses the ESI Juli@ soundcard and JRiver with the hope of assessing my room acoustically. I have a Radioshack digital SPL meter and was trying to use it's RCA output with REW ( friend suggested and tried to guide me). I last used REW about 14 years ago and then had an calibrated ECM Behringer 8000 microphone with a 48V phantom power supply. Unfortunately I sold this along with the rest of my kit at the time. I am getting a UMIK-1 over the next few days.

PROBLEM : Bottom line - REW and Windows 10 are not happy with each other, where I cannot find my Juli@ soundcard anywhere on my computer. I don't know who's responsible as I am getting neither to own up.

The Juli@ soundcard and JRiver has been a happy combination for years now, and have served me well. The introduction of REW has caused chaos ( I only got as far as the Input section and my computer kept rebooting). I stepped away from a while and upon returning hours later, could not find the soundcard anywhere.

I have trying to speak to, nudge REW, gently trying to get Windows to play with, but Juli@ (she surely is temperantal now), doesn't want to play along. No amount of reloading the drivers has helped.

Reboots sounds like a dodgy ASIO driver. If the Juli@ has Windows drivers switch REW to using Java drivers and select device names starting EXCL to use WASAPI Exclusive.

I will look at the ASIO and WASAPI drivers.

I reloaded REW and it only sees the (EXCL) Realtek Digital Output, Realtek Digital Output and the Primary Sound driver.

Previously Juli@ 12, 34 and 1234 was found. and the soundcard controls worked flawlessly. All missing at the moment.

I need to follow a process, what comes first, then next, process of elimination and renewal. any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks @John Mulcahy I deleted the old ASIO drivers and dowloaded newer WASAPI /ASIO drivers and reloaded the soundcard drivers and the Juli@ is back. Now to focus on setting it up again in JRiver, etc, etc.

@John Mulcahy A few minutes later...

The soundcard is gone again and Realtek is the default driver. There's certainly some conflict/ instability going on. Is it possible to point me towards a good Wasapi Exclusive download site, please. Thank you.

Thanks John. I think a fresh reinstall is order. I only use this computer/ souncard/ JRiver for music, so should be fine.

You can check your Juli@ health by booting into any linux distribution (e.g. Ubuntu or Mint) installed on a flash drive. The Juli@ driver is always present in linux kernel and the card will work out of the box, if electrically OK.

I am doing a complete reinstall of my computer today, and need correction file for my ESI Juli@ soundcard, is this necessary and how do I achieve it? Thanks.

You don't need one, but to generate one follow the instructions in the help.

Today, I decided to use a different set of measuring techniques :

Laptop/ REW/ USB Umik-1 microphone, 90 degree offset (L + R) / Denafrips Ares Dac - USB through Pathos (preamp)/ Modwright power amp / Vivid B1 speakers.

Here's some of the generated REW and further interpretation from a firnd on another local forum :

Left and Right speaker combined Psychoacoustic (attempts to model what you hear rather than what a mic picks up):

In this impulse graph, every spike following the initial spike is a nearby reflective surface - that surface being half the distance stated away from the speaker:
