Back in 2022, I was skeptical about seeing another iteration of Jack Reacher coming to the silver screen. While I LIKED the first Jack Reacher film with Tom Cruise headlining him, it was just another Tom Cruise movie with Jack Reacher’s name attached to it. It shared more in common with the film Shooter than it did any of Lee Child’s books. But hey, I like Tom Cruise, and it was fun to see him do his thang. But Thad Castle…..errr Alan Ritchson absolutely blew me away. He bulked up to bodybuilder muscle status, and absolutely embodied the cold and icy tone of the books (as best he could, cuz the silence that the novels portray him in just wouldn’t transfer over to the silver screen that well), and he was just a BEAST in the role. And while I didn’t review it for you guys as I did with Season One, I was a bit let down by the 2nd season. Alan had roided himself up so badly that it looked almost comical with the way he moved (it was pretty obvious he had JUST finished a massive PED cycle), and the inclusion of too many “good guys” made it feel almost like it was “team Reacher” instead of just a helping hand. But at the end of the day it was a solidly fun series, just a good ½ to full star less on the rating scale than I did with season one. But here….HERE we get a return to form with the powers that be scaling Reacher back to a one-man wrecking crew, AND Ritchson dialing back the PED’s JUST enough to where he looks ginormous, but not “1989 Batman stiff”, and actually elevating the story back to the quality we saw in season one.

Based upon the novel “Persuader”, Reacher is back to wandering the countryside once more. This time getting caught up in a DEA deal gone south when one of their agents is compromised and missing. Agreeing to help, Reacher (Ritchson) goes in undercover to figure out what’s going on. Posing as an ex-military guy needing a break, Reacher is hired as security to a local gun-running kingpin, and put in charge of his bullied son. Thing is, Reacher has his own motivations as well. As said gun runner is also connected to an even bigger gun runner. A guy that Reacher thought he had killed years ago. Now he can kill two birds with one stone. Take out the DEA’s dirty laundry, AND get revenge for the person who killed one of his men years ago.

The plot is solid enough, but nothing that is going to wow you. What makes season 3 so much fun is the fact that this is Jack Reacher at his finest. Cool, collected, and capable of just manhandling everyone but the biggest brutes without breaking a sweat (there is an absolutely awesome fight with Paulie, the gigantic head of security,y that makes the entire season worthwhile, even if the rest of what we watched was just static on screen), and of course making every girl on screen get weak in the knees. And simultaneously, we got less of the Scooby gang, and more of Jack just doing what he does with some occasional help (Neagley showing up near the end was a nice treat, and she wasn’t overused this season).

Also, it was nice to see some actual tension and danger this go around. Last season, Reacher, Neagle,y and the rest were basically an unstoppable force who just walked over the villain and his men. This time there’s some fear and uncertainty regarding the operation. At any moment, Reacher could be found out, the guy he’s chasing could recognize him, and the DEA getting involved (and messing things up a couple of times). Plus the head of security being an even BIGGER guy than Reacher (we thought that wasn’t possible) makes for a final fight scene that actually has stakes, instead of Reacher just tossing him around like a rag doll. Simply put, there are more stakes here, and despite some plot holes (such as the son getting to just drive off into the sunset during an active murder investigation), it’s a nice return to form that has Reacher rivaling the first season.

This is sadly the first season that Paramount has not had a 4K UHD release timed with the Blu-ray release (maybe we’ll get one in a few years) as the show was filmed and shown on Prime in 4K, but I digress. The state of TV shows on physical media (ESPECIALLY streaming exclusive shows) is extremely limited,d and I’m not going to kick said gift horse just for not getting 4K. And just like previous seasons, it looks great in motion. The 2.00:1 framed show looks very impressive, with a greenish tinge to this season (it was yellow the first season, dark teal for the second) and a slightly gauzy look to it. That being said, fine details are generally great, with crisp facial details and even the intimate clothing nuances, such as a loose thread on Reacher’s tight shirt, or the wrinkles in his Army uniform during flashbacks. The season is a bit dim except out on the street where Reacher is cracking skulls of the son’s bullies, but overall everything is clean as can be, and with very little digital noise to keep it from being perfect. All in all, a great looking set of discs.





Audio:

The first season I almost hesitated giving the audio a 4.5/5 as it was closer to a 4.25/5 than what I gave it, but this season I’m giving it a hearty 4.5/5 without said hesitation. The first season was much more a whodunnit with some action thrown in, while this go-around is much more action-oriented. Reacher smashes skulls, clubs villains to death, and blows things up when given half a chance. Needless to say, the audio mix is firing on all cylinders, with heavy surround usage and solid bass. Dialog is crisp and clean, located firmly in the center of the room, and ambiance is great. Music is clear and precise, with some really neat nuanced ambiance to it.

While I still hold that season one had the most charm and texture to it, Season three was a really great return to form for the series, and even season 4 (which is not finished airing) is looking to be as good or better than this one. But I will always love the first season the best. That being said, this is a great offering with great audio/video, but sadly NO extras on board. But don’t let that stop you from checking it out, as this is one of Amazon Prime’s best-running TV shows to date, and I highly recommend giving it a spin.

I’m watching season 4 on Prime. Still going strong! (oh, that’s a pun...)Still solid! (shoot, I did it again…). It was ripped from start to finish. (Doh!). You’ll like it
