Good day all,
I recently came across an old THX certified 5 channel amplifier that had a rated frequency bandwidth of 5hz to 20khz, and rated power at I believe 225 watts per channel for under a 1000.00. I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with this amplifier, and whether or not you believe it would be worth picking up. One caveat is that it does not have balanced inputs. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not much we can say without a model number, other than Parasound is a reputable brand known for its amplifiers.

Regards,
Wayne

Pretty much anything Parasound is going to be of excellent quality and should not present you any issues provided the unit is not faulty or damaged in some way.

The Parasound THX Home Theater Model Hca-2205a was introduced in 1998 and listed for about $2,500.00 retail... If in good condition I would expect it might be worth $750.00 to $1,000.00... It may be around 20 years old and needing a thorough going through by an experienced technician...

That's about what I saw it for. I am intrigued by the frequency bandwidth. I do not recall ever seeing an amplifier with those type of specs, and I definitely have not seen them on any of the new amplifiers. I'm curious how they would mate with my GE Triton Reference which are rated down to 13hz.

All 5 channels driven @ 300 watts RMS from 20 Hz to 20 kHz @ 8 Ω, which I would expect from a power amp, not an AVR, should drive your Tritons fine... I would still have a tech make sure its in tip top condition and well within its original specs...

PM'd..I know where a guy is selling a Classe CAV 150, 6 channel amp for $1k. This is an awesome amp for $1k...the only reason I have not snagged it is I need 6 balanced channels.

Review...

I used to have a pair of Classe 10 amps that ai drove in mono...absolutely the best amps I have ever heard... at the time I listened to Krells, Mark Levinson, and other amps that were very highly rated.
