Being that I’m not exactly a romance fan that steeps myself in period piece romance series, I was never that into Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series of books, but being that I was in charge of the fantasy section at my local book store YEARS ago during college, I had to familiarize myself with the ins and outs of the book series, and ended up getting sort of hooked. I haven’t been reading the latest books that she wrote over the years, but I HAVE been keeping up with the hit Starz show of the same name, and frankly, it’s not bad. I’ve enjoyed all previous 7 seasons of the show to some extent, and when I heard that season eight would be the series finale I was a bit surprised. Diana Gabaldon hadn’t finished the book series when this was airing, so the show was going to need to Game of Thrones itself by crafting its own unique ending for the show. A feat that can turn out well sometimes, but also crash and burn as book readers expectations meet TV show viewership, so cross fingers.
Over the years Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) relationship has been the key focal point of the entire series, even though in many seasons they have been separated (both minorly, and sometimes majorly via great distances), but this season brings them both back together for the entirety of the run, which is a really sweet thing to do considering their long stretches apart. And long gone are the novelty aspects of their relationship. At first it was simply a “fish out of time” tale, with the novelty of the two time differentiated lovers acting as the “spark” of the show. But as the seasons have progressed Clair and Jamie’s relationship has changed as well. Now it’s no longer just a trope, as the two have actually formed a distinct intimate bond that drives the show forward. Claire is still the feisty nurse wants to take care of everyone, but Jamie has evolved the most. Having been put through hell and back and STILL wants to protect the ones he loves
This season we have a more nostalgic take, as this is a send off for the characters with a lot of previous character returning for the sendoff. But some of them are a bit far fetched as the show has drifted further and further away from the narrative of the later books. Such elements such as Jamie and Claire’s first child Faith, who had died at birth, now gets shifted back into the story. And it sort of clashes with what we know of some events in the story. I know this time travel stuff is awkward at “times” (yes, pun included), but it does add some interesting elements. Especially in regards to the theme of time being a tapestry, with threads woven throughout all of it, interconnecting throughout.
Season eight isn’t flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s a nice send off for our leads. And it adds in a bunch of recurring older characters to bring the family dynamics of the show to a close. Perhaps fans of the books will be a frustrated that the series took a side detour from the official novel narrative, but overall this is a nice wrap up for everything that has gone on over the 8 season arc of the show.

Video:
I'm pretty much beating a dead horse after eight seasons, but Sony is so dang consistent with their video encodes that it's really hard to avoid. Outlander: The Complete Eigth Season is more than capable of looking amazing, with sweeping shots of the countryside (wherever time or location that might be at the time) looking absolutely amazing. Bright green foliange, blue lakes, hazy misty afternooons. It's all replicated perfectly with rich colors and deeply saturated primary shades. Fine details are superb all the way around, with only a few moments inside with the lights off where I noticed what might be described as "sorta murky". Black crush happens every once in a while, but its fleeting and doesn't cause any visual problems. And honestly, this is just a superb looking encode all the way around. Spread out over 4 BD-50s with only 10 episodes makes for more than enough bitrate to keep everything looking their best.
Audio:

Similarly to last season, Sony’s DTS-HD MA track found on board is almost equally impressive as the video score. It manages to satisfy on all fronts with an extremely robust and energetic mix. There are plenty of forward heavy moments that rely entirely on dialog and some mild background surround usage, and the show is filled with so much action and so much ambient energy (the rustling of branches, thudding of horses hooves over hardened ground, or gunshots blasting off) that you can never say that this isn’t an encompassing experience. Bass response is deep and guttural when the action kicks up, and also knows when fade off into the background the dialog centric parts of the show. And once more, I have to give this a near-perfect rating.

Final Score:
With season 8 of Outlander ending before Gabaldon’s final book in the series came out forced the show runners to pull a Game of Thrones on us and come up with their own ending. The series finale and the final season weren’t perfect, but they made a good sendoff for Jamie Claire, and should satisfy MOST people. This has been a sort of guilty pleasure for me the last 12 years, and it’s nice to see the show wrap up without cancellation cutting it brutally short, and Sony’s Blu-ray set has very good technical specs. Extras are a bit weak as usual, but if I have ONE piece of Advice to Sony. Please stock using stack packs. The OCD collector in me dies a little time inside whenever I see a stack pack case. Good Watch is my final recommendation.
