(July 18, 2023) One of the largest speaker manufacturers in the UK, Monitor Audio, has announced a new subwoofer series called Anthra. The series expands Monitor's impressive speaker offerings with a trio of powerful active subwoofers designed to deliver controlled depth with "unprecedented musicality and dynamics."

Despite boasting a large 15" driver, the series' top model, the Anthra W15, arrives weighing just shy of 90lbs. With that manageable weight comes a cabinet that won't overwhelm a room (17.28"H x 17.28"W x17.28"D). The driver features Monitor's Rigid Surface Technology II (RST II) and C-CAM driver fed by a powerful 1.400-watt Class D power amplifier. Stepping down, the Anthra W12 carries a 12-inch driver powered by a 900-watt Class D amp, while the smallest subwoofer of the group, the Anthra W10, features a 425-watt 10-inch driver.

Key features include:
  • Lightweight, rigid cones: C-CAM cones are resistant to torsion for fidelity across the entire frequency range, while RST II makes its first appearance in a Monitor subwoofer. The latter tech increases the rigidity of the cone to withstand mechanical torsional forces for less distortion.
  • Class D Amplification: Three levels of amplification across the subs (425, 900, and 1,400 watts RMS) offer peak outputs of 500, 1700, and 2,500 watts, respectively.
  • Beefy Cabinets: The subs benefit from thick MDF exteriors, braced for rigidity.
  • Driver Technology: Motor assemblies feature long dual-layered, copper-coated aluminum wire and round-wound voice coils.
  • Broad Connectivity: Inputs include both RCA and XLR inputs, with both allowing up to four subs to be linked together.
  • Color Display: A display on the backside of each sub presents rotary controls for accessing a setup menu.
  • App Control: The included "MaestroUnite" app allows for simple configuration and control of single and multi-sub deployments.
  • Two Colors: All three models are available in Gloss Black and Satin White. Matching cloth-covered magnetically attached grilles are included.
Factory-specified output across all three subs (-6dB) lands in the 16 to 17Hz range, but pricing is wildly different. The entry-level W10 model lands at $2,350, the 12" W12 carries a price tag of $2,700, and the top-of-the-line W15 will set you back $3,500. Availability is set to begin in August 2023.
