It’s not shocking by now, but Taylor Sheridan is basically keeping Paramount Plus afloat with a rash of “dude” series that have all been direct spin offs, or inspired by the success of Yellowstone. Many of you know I liked Yellowstone for a while, but got tired of the soap opera level of drama that the show descended to. That being said, the spinoff miniseries have been almost better than the show, and it wasn’t shocking when Rip and Kayce got their own shows. And frankly, I’m kind of for it. Sheridan has basically been churning out hit after hit, despite some of the stumbles of Yellowstone, and matured his schtick for the spinoffs, so I was curious how I would feel about Marshals. I mean, Rip and Beth were the ones everyone was waiting for, and while Kayce was not my favorite Dutton, he was still an interesting character. And while I’m not going to bash this first season, I will say that I was a bit underwhelmed.

Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) has seen and felt the heart and soul of the modern Dutton world. He’s stuck by his dad in their skullduggery and in the form of a law enforcement officer. Now Kayce has moved on and is making use of his time overseas on the home front when he joins special operations team that will test his abilities once more. This time it’s not protecting the family, nor is it about fighting for a war overseas that scarred him for life. This time it’s the state of Montana as he investigates a new case load. All the while trying to form a relationship with his son Tate (Brecken Merill).

Marshals is a series that his high on character development like its predecessors, but also one high in action and intrigue. Especially now that we get to explore Kayce’s military background a bit more, and his job as an LEO. The Dutton name and reputation is front and center, while allowing Kacye to flex as an individual character. And Grimes is more than capable of keeping the character as the support piece for the show. But the writing itself is the weak spot in what should have been a smash hit. I’ve always ENJOYED Kayce even though he wasn’t my favorite Dutton. But he works much better as a side character than a lead in my opinion. And that’s not due to Grimes either. It’s moreso that he was never written that well to begin with, and there isn’t much place to go with his arc.

The show has some good things going for it, with some interesting cases that allow Kayce to really step up and use his lethal skill sets. But at the same time, I can’t help but get over how derivative some of the episodes are. They got more and more absurd as time went on, and by the end of the show I felt like we had seen the same episode repeated 2 or 3 times. This feels like it has Yellowstones history, but none of the charm that came with it. Droll and a bit rough at times, Marshals has potential, but not enough ground floor world building in it’s freshman season.

Not shocking if you’ve kept up with Yellowstone, but Paramount’s 1080p 2.00:1 AVC encode is top notch from beginning to end. The picture is luscious and rich in color and clarity, showcasing stunning details ranging from white crop tops, to razor burn on a man’s face. Facial details are natural looking, and overall depth and clarity of the show is stunning. There’s some light grays and bright whites the the previous show as famous for, and the colors are rich and full despite the off and on monochromatic image some scenes could look like. Black levels are dark and inky with no signs of crush of banding anywhere. Maybe not PERFECT, but pretty close to it.

The first seasons gets a nice 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track (a bit surprised at the lack of DTS-HD MA) that is certainly more than capable. A high quality track with good surround usage in the Montana fields, as well as the spicier action bits where gunfire and yelling fills out the sound stage. LFE is punchy and room filling when necessary, but also light and airy when the more dialog centric bits are in play. Musical pacing and score is top notch ,and dialog is readily listenable at just about any level. I did find a few characters mumbling to be a bit annoying, but other than that, this is a killer track.

Marshals works in some ways, fails in other, but seems to be a nice compendium piece for the world of Yellowstone. Most of the show spends a lot of time reminding the viewer of its pedigree, but also expands on Kayce abilities in ways that the original show didn’t delve into. As such I’m in the weird position of both wanting to like it, and recognizing how flawed the show it. Worth a watch for sure, but just not as revolutionary as I was hoping for. The audio and video are good, but like usual, there are no extras to dig into.
