Joon-Ho’s directorial debut, Barking Dogs Don’t Bite tells the story of an out-of-work college professor driven out-of-mind by the barking dogs in his apartment complex and the extreme measures taken to fix the problem. Placed on several top 10 lists in 2007 and nominated for various awards, including Blue Dragon, Asian Film and Saturn Awards, The Host told the horrifying story of a monster kidnapping one man’s daughter and his heroic attempts to save her, becoming the highest grossing South Korean film at the time.
Mother is a tale of a fiercely protective mother who, when her mentally ill son becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a young woman, takes the law into her own hands to prevent the nightmarish end of her family. Similar to his earlier works, Mother became popular amongst critics and award associations, and the film ultimately became South Korea’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards.
