I know this should probably be posted in a mac forum but i'm hoping someone here has same issue.
I've connected my Macbook via minidisplay/hdmi to my Yamaha AVR and it shows up fine on macs sound tab
My issue is the macbook says Yamaha "has no output controls" and hence volume control greyed out and set at zero.
REW sees the input and I have all channels available on the Measure tab.
The test signal in the Audio Midi works fine on each channel but there is no output when trying to measure levels

It isn't that unusual not to have control over the output volume, that wouldn't be the cause of no output. Your AVR needs to be in a mode (and plugged into an input) that accepts multichannel PCM over HDMI. There's a very good thread on mac setup here.
