M&K Sound Launches X+ Series Subwoofers, 15-Inch Model Achieves THX Dominus Status

(December 7, 2021) Subwoofer launches are always exciting. There’s just something special about raging power and high-test technologies harnessed in a heavy box. But when a subwoofer launch includes a gladiator-esque THX Certification status called “Dominus,” all levels of excitement are quickly replaced with a vibe of full-on wickedness and dreams of near-limitless low-end ferocity.

Today, Denmark’s M&K Sound has revealed three new subwoofers as part of its X Series reboot. The new models include the dual 10” driver X10+ with THX Select certification (25.5 x 15.7 x 13.4 in, 88.4 lbs), the dual 12” driver X12+ with THX Ultra certification (28.7 x 17.7 x 15.2 in, 101.2 lbs), and the biggest of big brothers: the company’s first-ever dual 15” driver X15+ graced with THX's Certified Dominus status (32.8 x 20.3 x 18.1 in, 134.7 lbs).

The new X+ Series features numerous upgrades over M&K's original X subs, including brand-new Danish designed and built ICE Class D amplifiers capable of “huge RMS and peak wattage power hikes.” The X10+ model carries a 500 watt (1000 watt peak) amp, while the X12+ and X15+ bumps output to 600W RMS/1200W Peak and 700W RMS/1400W Peak, respectively. That kind of power feeds woofers with 30% larger voice coils and magnets, designed to operate with increased linear excursion for massive output that doesn’t sacrifice sensitivity or suffer from distortion. M&K says output boldly ventures into “feel it but can’t hear it” regions, with frequencies reaching as low as 16Hz (X15+), 18Hz (X12+), and 20Hz (X10+).

All three subs have cabinets are built with 25mm MDF, housing the company’s Push-Pull subwoofer architecture and reversed double driver non-isobaric configuration. This design allows both drivers in the cabinet to be exposed to room air, leading to reduced distortion by a cancellation of non-linearities. Other features include balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs/outputs, 180-degree phase control, and auto-power detection.

“We are pleased to announce THX Certification in three THX performance classes for the audio innovator, M&K Sound,” said Steven Martz, vice president of global technology, THX Ltd. “M&K audio engineers are among the world’s best, and passing THX rigorous standards for audio certification means passing hundreds of tests. M&K can be proud of this accomplishment, and audio enthusiasts everywhere will be pleased with the extraordinary pure, powerful output of these superb subwoofers.”

THX’s Dominus Certification applies to speakers capable of achieving reference levels in rooms up to 6,500 cubic feet. That means the X15+ can effectively operate in a room that’s a large as 38’ long x 19’ wide x 9’ tall! The X10+ and X12+ are THX Certified for rooms up to 2,000 and 3,000 cubic feet, respectively.

The X+ Series will be available in January 2022 from authorized M&K Sound dealers for $4,499 (X10+), $4,999 (X12+) and $5,999 (X15+).

THX/M&K just supplied some dimensions and weight specs... the 15" version is a big guy! Almost 135lbs!

What's new here? Except for the mysterious cooled by "room air", just more of the same. If they had gone to motional feedback, this would innovative.

Anybody know how that cooling works?

BTW, there is content in the real world (if not on recordings) of vibrations you feel but not hear. But it is necessary to move vast quantitities of air to be able to perceive it.

A 15" driver version is new. More powerful amps. Redesigned drivers with increased linear excursion. Can almost guarantee that these subs will get a nice little performance boost from proper placement in a room.

We're on the sample list, so hopefully we'll get a chance to find out!
