Kicking off a a JVC RS520 owners thread...

I just replaced an RS45 with this beast, very pleased (thus far) with performance out of the box). Will update further as I dig into the projector's features and 4K-compatability (once I get a fibre optic cable deployed).

Just curious if I am thinking this through right. If you don't have a 4K receiver you can run a HDMI cable from the HDMI main on the Samsung 4k player to the projector and then run a HDMI cable from the HDMI audio on the Samsung 4k player to your non-4k receiver? Is this correct as a work around for non-4k receivers?

Yes, assuming that your Player allows for that (I know that OPPO does)... You run 4K to the PJ, and then use the 1.4 HDMI out to go to your receiver.

Have you played any 1st person shooter online video games on the projector, with an xbox or PS4? Interested if there are any lag latency issues?

Believe it or not, finally got it installed and watched the first disc this past weekend. PQ is off the charts out of the box... I'll calibrate it once the bulb has a chance to age a 100 hours or so.

I'm not a video gamer... so won't be testing latency. However, JVC specifically says latency issues have been corrected on 2017 models.

Alright. I've had a solid month of use with the RS520. The projector is in a dedicated - movies - only system, so the projector hasn't hit 100 hours yet. When it does, I'll drag out the calibration equipment and fire-up a full review. I can say, however, that out-of-the-box colors in the THX mode are excellent to my eyes. I don't see any type of red push... flesh tones don't appear green or lifeless... the picture looks balanced.

Black levels are excellent as is image clarity.

Standard Blu-ray playback (as compared to my older RS45) looks practically the same. The 520 offers slightly better blacks and shadow detail (and, with e-shift, the image is more vibrant and sharp). If I were an owner of an older RS series projector and was on a tight budget, I don't think I'd recommend racing out to buy a new JVC. Now, if you're interested in 4K/HDR, then obviously an upgrade would be worth it.

So you like the THX mode over Cinema?

Honestly, Sonnie, I need to go back and look at both modes again. I'd imagine THX is closer where you want to be. Once my lamp gets 100 hours on it, I'll pull out my gear and get some actual readings so we know what we're dealing with.

Please let me know what you find out. I don't think I've even tried THX yet.

I was thinking one of the guys at JVC told me to use Cinema or HDR, but I could be wrong.

Typically Cinema or Movie modes are the way to go on any display. But if there's a dedicated ISF or THX mode, those actually get you closer to ideal.

I just don't want to go through the hassle of measuring and tweaking while the bulb is going through this first 100 hrs. Too much will change ;-)

Come down here and tweak mine.... almost 200 hours already.

I'll hop in the car... see you in about 17 hrs! :-)

So after skimming thru 86 pages in the JVC owner's thread over at AVS... I think I finally found the recommended settings for the 520 until professional calibration can be completed.
  • User 1 with the Custom 1 color profile
  • 6500 for Grayscale
  • Gamma to Custom 1, 2.4 with Dark Level at +3
  • Brightness set to +1 and Contrast set to -1
  • Set all motion enhancements to off
  • Set MPC to your preference with Enhance at 2 or 3 with all others at 0
  • Clear black to 1
  • Lamp and Iris position to taste (set manual Iris position to your desired onscreen brightness), then set to Auto 2
However... some have stated the Custom 1 color profile has too much red tone... and Standard or Reference looks better.

Supposedly these are close enough for the 620 as well.

I don't see a "Clear black" setting on my 620... nor do I see a Lamp or Iris position. Perhaps those are only on the 420 and 520.

That must be for standard HD?

It's killing me, Sonnie. I want to drag my gear out and calibrate this puppy. Need time! (got any?)

Ralph Potts sent me a link I need to share with you... I haven't had time to digest it all.

I guess you could say that, yeah... although the e-Shifts are basically SHD with some bling added. I personally like THX better and that's what I am running with for now.

And... the Roku DOES cause the JVC to go into HDR mode. I turned on a program that was HDR on Amazon Prime and it kicked into high fan mode and you could tell it was HDR.

Also... I think I found the magical connection at 10 meters. The RuiPro fiber optic cable was apparently the problem with the audio and video dropouts using the Ruko Ultra, along with the occasional loss of video with the black screen and colored lines at the top and bottom of the screen when changing inputs and therefore forcing a restart of the JVC to clear it. I installed a 10 meter Ethereal Velox passive cable with the HDM-GA1 at the JVC with another Velox 1 meter cable, and the powered USB cable for the GA1.

:fingers-crossed: (jinx banned) Thus far it's been flawless! (jinx is banned) :fingers-crossed:

Still using 1 meter AudioQuest from the source units to the CX-A5100. I've changed those out with the Velox and there was no change.

So... a rather expensive setup to get the Roku working correctly, but... I like the Roku better than the Nvidia Shield TV Pro that was $200 more than the Roku, so I guess it somewhat balances out.

I didn't realize you had a Yama in your system. How do you like it? Have you tried the MusicCast room correction?

It's pretty nice, but I haven't tried the MusicCast. YPAO is the room correction, but I don't use it either since I have Dirac Live.

I spoke too soon on the Ethereal combo cable and GA1... (I jinxed it :rolleyesno: ). I thought for a minute it was fixed, but after watching an Amazon show it requires I restart the JVC after each show if it's HDR. :thud:

By restart, you mean have to power down and power up the JVC?

Yup... shutdown/power down and power up... about 3 minutes.

However, that is only when running the HDMI thru the Yamaha 5100 (or the Denon 4300). If I connect the Roku directly to the JVC and run a optical cable to the processor... it improves the input switching (handshake) and has no issue video wise when watching HDR shows. The audio will not register/display the sound mode... it only displays PCM.

I also tried changing the video setting to Direct (not Pass Through) - and it helped things for a while. I thought that might have fixed it, but nope, after about 2 shows the black screen with colored lines came back, requiring a restart.

I am giving up on the Roku with the JVC until either Roku or JVC get the bugs worked out. I guess I'll go with the Shield. At least it did not require a restart in between HDR shows.

I'll be installing an RS540U next weekend!

Well, I can’t really say, as my friend is a dealer. But he had it listed at $4k.
