The Jurassic Park franchise has certainly had its ups and downs, twists and turns. Or, being more precise, the series has had its good moments, its bad moments, and its REALLY bad moments. Spielberg’s original film trilogy is pretty much a staple for every kid who grew up in the 90s and VERY early 2000s (even though the 3rd film was hot garbage), and the score is something any cinemaphile worth his (or her) salt can pick up within the first 3 notes being played. But after so many years, nobody in their right mind ever expected the franchise to get reborn after the crummy 3rd film. Even when Jurassic World was announced, I firmly stood in the camp that it was too little, too late. Only to eat some serious crow when the 2015 reboot actually worked. It was fun, it had lots of dinosaurs, Chris Pratt at the peak of his Marvel fame, and a well-done script that hearkened back to the original, while still making its own mark on the franchise. The 2nd and 3rd film in the new reboot “world” verse went downhill from there (much like the original trilogy), but was still entertaining enough in a big-budget sort of way. But with the sheer amount of money that Universal basically printed with the Jurassic World trilogy, it was inevitable that we would get ANOTHER entry into the series. Except this one would basically be a final gasping breath from a series that has stretched itself so thin that I can hear Bilbo Bagging talking about butter being spread too thin over too much bread after seeing Rebirth.

5 years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion, we are reintroduced to a post-dinosaur earth. But unlike the intimations of Dominion, humankind and dinosaurs are not living together once more. The effects of global warming and climate change have killed off all of the dinosaurs, relegating the last remaining ones to live in the tropical islands around the equator, which the world's governments have listed as a no-go zone. But that means jack squat in this world, as a giant pharmaceutical company decides that it wants to go down to a secret research island in the tropics, and harvest some Dinosaur DNA to create billions of dollars of profit by making new medicines from it. Sleazy executive Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend, who weirdly looks like Orlando Bloom) hires spec ops mercenary Zora Bennett (Scar Jo) to take him and his scientists down to a super secret research facility for the original Jurassic World projects. But instead of leftover dinosaurs, this island is home to the genetic freaks and problem children from the experiments. The dinosaurs that mutated or were too odd for even the theme park. There, they can harvest said DNA from a few choice specimens, and everyone can get paid to the tune of millions of dollars.

However, things don’t exactly go as planned, and soon enough the mercenaries, the scientists, AND a random family all get stranded on the hidden island where they’re forced to battle for their lives in hopes of finding their way off their little prison. Sadly for us, Jurassic World: Rebirth is the worst film in the series by FAR. But the good news is, Jurassic Park 3 is no longer the worst film in the franchise. Hilariously enough, Rebirth rips scenes and plot elements straight out of the 3rd Jurassic Park movie, including the pterodactyl scene (just without the coolness of Billy leaping off a railing with a parachute) and the Spinosaurus ending, just with a bigger and badder dinosaur named the D-Rex (which looks like a hybrid between the Indominous Rex from Jurassic World and the alien/human baby from Alien 4). Yet everything about it is strangely worse than Jurassic Park III.

Simply put, Jurassic World: Rebith just….happens. It is a movie that has people in it, and dinosaurs too. It is a movie of all time, with a budget and a profit. It has a beginning and an end. And that’s about all there is to it. All jokes aside, Jurassic World: Rebirth is just the series struggling to make something, anything, happen with the exhausted franchise. Plot points and effects are stolen from the previous films, with more mutant dinosaurs taking the place of classic villains. Even the humans are pretty much coasting on steam, with Scar-Jo acting like Dwayne Johnson’s hammy character from Jungle Cruise, and the rest reading their lines like they’re on a soap opera. About the only person actually giving his character a go is Ali, who actually turns in a performance that has a hint of sincerity to it. The movie??? Well, its only distinction is that it makes Jurassic Park III no longer the whipping boy of the series.

Rating:

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence/action, bloody images, some suggestive references, language, and a drug reference.

Shot on film and given a native 4K master, Rebirth looks exceptionally good on 4K UHD and the included Blu-ray. As someone who is so used to seeing just about every movie over the last decade be shot on digital, seeing a movie actually shot on good 35mm film stock is heartwarming. There’s something deeply warm and rich to the presentation, as it showcases a nice grain structure with intimate-looking details, but also decently stylized as well. The palette leans towards dimmed forest settings on the island, with heavy sepia tones for the daylight sequences, and a grungier look for nighttime shots. The colors are warm and rich, but not too heavily saturated or overly brightened. The Blu-ray looks almost washed out in comparison to how the Dolby Vision darkens the 4K UHD disc. Details are quite impressive all the way around, with only a few shots showing grain spikes or some black crush. Overall, this is a superb-looking image, with a few minor issues mentioned above that keep it from being a 5/5 rating.

Being one of the “good guys”, Universal uses the same Dolby Atmos track for both the 4K UHD disc AND the Blu-ray, so fans will be able to get next-gen audio with whichever version of the film they pick up. And said Atmos track is quite the crowd pleaser as well. It’s not AS wild or aggressive as previous entries, but it is a great track nonetheless. Heights have a ton of discrete instances throughout, with the surrounds and LFE channel being used quite extensively. Dialog is crisp and cleanly located up front like expected, with the chaotic chases really opening things up quite a bit. The screams and forest cries really enhance the directional shifting nature of the track, while the LFE pounds you in the chest with each foot stomp of a T-rex, or the roaring of the river as it sweeps the Delgado family away from it.

Final Score: :3.5stars:

Is Rebirth a truly horrible film? Nah, it’s not that bad. But it is big-budget slop that really doesn’t have any reason to exist outside of the fact that Universal was hoping to continue printing money indefinitely with the franchise. And sadly, we may get more, because this film had a $180 million budget and grossed almost a billion dollars worldwide (though it certainly fell far short of its predecessors). That being said, fans of the series may want to give it a lazy Saturday watch due to the fact that it is still a decent enough popcorn movie, and the audio specs are well worth spinning up the system for. Couple that with some actually hefty (for this day and age) extras, and the package is quite appealing. Personally, I would rent this before buying unless you’re already a fan, or just a completionist (like me, Guiltily so)
