(November 15, 2017) Everyone enjoys the power of great bass, but not everyone desires to have a large subwoofer sitting in the corner of their media room. That’s where in-wall subwoofer solutions enter the picture, delivering concealable designs that produce capable bass without the presence of a large space-eating cabinet.

JL Audio recently announced a new addition to its Fathom line of in-wall subwoofers. The new Fathom IWS-SYS-108 is an 8-inch driver version of the company’s 13.5-inch driver IWS model, offering nearly limitless installation flexibility in standard 16-inch on center stud openings. It also carries a very small grill opening, making it the perfect solution for audio fans seeking to minimize their equipment’s visual impact.

"Fathom IWS systems start with a premise that our customers should not need to lower their expectations for sound quality when selecting an in-wall subwoofer solution. The IWS-108 and 208 systems combine our expertise in driver, enclosure and amplifier design to deliver on this core principle, in a compact package that is easy to integrate into any room," added Manville Smith, VP of Marketing.

The IWS-SYS-108 taps the power of a proprietary port system that vents through a slot located on the perimeter of the woofer, allowing the in-wall sub to deliver impressive low-end output extending below 25 Hz. The speaker’s 8-inch long excursion driver is fueled by an external rack-mountable amplifier that’s rated to output 600 Watts of power. The amp is capable of driving up to two IWS-SYS-108 subs and also carries an onboard 18-band Digital Automatic Room Optimization system that’s controlled via its LCD menu interface.

Owners can feed the sub using unbalance stereo or mono RCA jacks, in addition to a High-Level stereo or mono connections. Operationally speaking, it features standard on/off functionality along with an automatic signal-sensing power mode.

The IWS-SYS-108 is priced at $2,1000 and can be purchased as a dual system for $3,200. Visit JL Audio for more information.

I always wonder with in all subs, will the entire wall shake?? :)

If installed properly, no more than a normal sub!

"if" is the operative word there. lol. :)

$2100, ouch! If space is so limited, it seems it would be so much better to build an end table sub. I understand a lot of us aren't able to build that sort of thing, but that seems like a better solution to this problem - a commercially built end table sub. Make it modular so you can change the "skin" of the sub depending on the furniture aesthetic. You can also deal with room nodes more easily by moving a table than cutting multiple huge holes in your walls :)
