(November 9, 2022) The Japan Audio Society (JAS) has given MQA's latest scalable codec, SCL6, a confident stamp of approval by certifying it for use with the JAS "Hi-Res Audio Wireless" logo. This highly recognizable logo featuring a gold badge and bold lettering can be found on popular audio products and streaming services, alike.

SCL6 will publicly launch under the name "MQair," and is billed as another building block for high-level wireless audio performance. It's designed to deliver detail and clarity by focussing on the time domain, which the company says is a critical factor in our perception of high-resolution sound.

Supporting both MQA and PCM audio up to 384kHz, MQair claims to scale bit rates from from 20Mbps to below 200kbps via Bluetooth, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and WiFi. This implies the technology can deliver consistent quality despite changes in data rates. It also offers low latency and high efficiency, both of which the company says extends a wireless device's battery life.

According to Bob Stuart, MQA Founder & CTO, “We are very honoured that JAS has certified SCL6 for use with its Hi-Res AUDIO WIRELESS logo. This latest technology is born of our passion for the highest sound quality and an understanding that such quality brings us closer to the music. With MQair we can improve the listening experience for many listeners and extend the MQA ecosystem to wireless devices. High resolution isn’t necessarily defined by the big things – it is shaped by small elements in the sound that convey details, separation, colour and space. Our reference for transparency is air itself. We are excited to use these insights in the design of MQair to bring a more enjoyable experience to audio fans and music lovers everywhere.”

Because MQair is still in its infancy, compatible products and streaming services have yet to be announced. Stay tuned for specifics as more details about the technology are released.
