With Arrow, Shout! Studios and 88 Films in full swing with Hong Kong films the last several years, I feel like we’re in another golden age of home video for those of us who love Hong Kong Cinema. And while I love all generations of it, the golden age of Hong Kong action movies was definitely the 80s and 90s with the rise of Golden Harvest, Bruce Lee, Sammo Hung, and Jackie Chan. And with Shout! And Arrow releasing so many Jackie Chan films lately, I was really hoping that we would get something from his 1990s rise to stardom. You know, that period where the American market was suddenly overrun with a million Jackie Chan films, and the Chinese action star became an international superstar overnight. And thankfully, with Arrow diving deep into Warner’s catalog archives,s all those New Line Cinema films that he did suddenly are open to them, resulting in a killer 4K UHD boxset featuring the six original films that shot him up to the heights that allowed him to make the Rush Hour and Shanghai series a few years later.
And what makes this set special is not that we got the films I grew up watching on VHS back in the 90s, but that we finally get the uncut versions. Back in the 90s, New Line Cinema was adamant about cutting the Hong Kong films for run time, re-editing them with new dubs, new scoring, and hugely altering the flow of the films to try and make them light and breezy for American audiences. Some of the movies (Mr. Nice Guy, Thunderbolt) had minimal changes, while others in the set (Rumble in the Bronx, Who Am I?, First Strike) had massive changes that made them almost completely different films. Thankfully, Arrow has given us a massive set here, including the New Line Cinemas International cuts, as well as the Hong Kong cut (and sometimes an additional Japanese cut) of ALL six films in the set.

Final Score:
There are a few minor quirks in this set (notice the video score sections of Rumble in the Bronx and Who Am I?), but overall this is an incredible set. Arrow had done a great job remastering the films, and including the original Hong Kong cuts AND the New Line Cinema cuts that we grew up with here in the States was a great choice. Audio and video are killer all the way around, and the extras are superb. My only “kick the dog and pout” moment was realizing that we didn’t get the Rush Hour films, as they were right around this same time period. My only hope is that Warner is saving that for their own 4K UHD boxset, as those were massive earners for them. But I digress. If you’re a Jackie Chan fan who has been lamenting the lack of his 90s films in 1080p or 2160p, then this will be right up your alley.
