No, not "Star Wars" the category... but Star Wars the movie. The original.

I’ve got to admit something, and it feels a little like stepping on sacred ground: I think I’m experiencing a bit of Star Wars fatigue. Last night, I rewatched the original Star Wars for the first time in about a decade, and I found that it just didn’t have the same nostalgic pull for me. Yes, the nostalgia is there... it brought back memories from the 70s... hunting for Star Wars action figures at the Lionel Kiddy City in Colorado Springs, CO. Fantasizing about having my own light saber... and all of the magic of such a forward-thinking fight up amongst the stars.

But it’s starting to show a few warts that took me out of the viewing experience. My memory is that the warts were easily overlooked by the sheer nature of the film. But, for whatever reason, that didn't happen this time around. It seemed more hokey to me.

Now, when it comes to how I rank the films, I used to feel like the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back were neck-and-neck as the best of the franchise. And while I’d still give the edge to Empire, I actually think there’s a good argument now for The Force Awakens edging out the original. I actually think it might be a better overall film experience.

Have I lost my mind?

You are seeing this via the 2025 lens of quick gratification and fast paced video content that is prevalant in today's world. As well as the technology back then was very weak when compared to today's film techology.

Also, Disney kind of over did star wars, similar to what they did with Marvel so this is also hitting those original films when comparing subconsciously unintentionally.

I would go one step further, Star Wars was inspired from Akira Kurosawa's films "The Hidden Fortress" and "Seven Samurai" and consequently it is just a soap opera western set in space yet I feel those Kurosawa's films still hold water while the original Star Wars doesn't.

I don’t know —- I love a good, long slow burn!

Hmmm… I’ve never seen (let alone heard of) those Akira films. Need to do some research!

So, you’re also feeling like the original Star Wars is not pulling its weight?

If you have not seen those Akira Kurosawa's films, definately see them. Well worth checking out.
I believe they can be seen via Max and The Criteron channel (the hidden fortress, Seven Samurai) and Amazon has them but you have to rent (the hidden fortress, Seven Samurai).

@Michael Scott may have reviews on those Akira Kurosawa's films or more insight on those films.

I am also feeling the lack of appeal for those original star wars films but that could be due to the oversaturation of the whole franchise..
