Although it may make some sense to compare TVs with Projectors from a subjective point of view... In my mind it makes no sense to compare direct light devices, read TVs, with reflected light devices, read Projectors and Screens... Like comparing Nits with Lumens... How does screen gain come into play in these comparisons? What if there was a screen with a gain of 3.426...
You don't compare nits to lumens. They are a measure of light. They are the same.

High gain screens bring even more issues to the table. Firstly being is the published gain actually the gain of the screen? Second being viewing cone - it would be very narrow at your lumen to nit value. I could get into that more but I'm pressed for time at the moment. Third being the hot spots - could probably lump this in with viewing cone. Fourth would be artifacts - high gain screens tend to introduce bad elements to the picture. In the past mica was used to raise gain at a detriment to the overall picture.

As to the comaprison of direct light to reflected light, the comparison has always been there. And it's not subjective. The only thing that may change is that there may be an affordable option to replace a projector in the future with an OLED or microLED. And that's a big maybe!

There is never enough brightness for a good HDR picture from a projector. I don’t care how much money you toss at your pj. The Holy Grail at this point is an affordable micro-LED display or OLED in the 100+ inch range.

I would categorize the picture from a projector as ‘acceptable’ or ‘not acceptable’ when it comes to HDR.
I disagree 100% - and I own an LG C1 OLED. Up to diffuse white, SDR and HDR are identical when calibrated properly. Once you have twice the brightness required for SDR or around 30 fL (100 nits) and have proper tone mapping, you get an incredible HDR picture. Note in the histogram below that both are tracking the same until you get to the HDR specular highlights.

This past weekend there was a huge projector shootout in Kansas City. Here is a link to a very extensive summary: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/kansas-city-projector-shootout-jan-8th-9th.3227498/post-61340800. They even did some various tone mapping comparisons.

From the thread:
After seeing same scene so many times was easier to go home and compare to my Sony A80j 77" Oled and was shocked how close these projectors are to the OLED. With that said not sure how bright these scenes got up to but while yes some extra bright in parts but was not a big deal (OLED vs Projectors)

And I disagree with your disagree! But I will not clog up this thread any longer with off topic discussion. But I cannot wait to read that thread where they compared a Sony A80J OLED to a projector and the pj won!

Exactly. Reflected light (more natural) and a larger screen at a price within my means has kept me with a PJ.
If the screen size and price was the same though, an OLED becomes very attractive.

They really are completely different products. For the price, it's hard to beat these UST projectors. The ones I've seen in person look great. No, not as great as an OLED, but amazing nonetheless!

Robert - I sincerely apologize for taking your thread off the rails! This will be my last post off topic, I promise!

They are a different means to an identical end. There won’t be any large OLEDs replacing 120” screens anytime soon. There are MicroLED displays though. Are MicroLED and OLED displays better than a projector? A thousand times yes! In pretty much every category. But you cannot get them in the sizes that people currently use projectors. That’s the limiting factor. Well that and I’d have no idea if I could get a 100” flat panel to my basement (I’d make it work when you get them Robert!).

Are projectors acceptable until all of this changes? Absolutely. Is it good? That’s subjective!

I think I might own blame for the hijack:hide:

On a positive note, we all agree that UST Projectors offer a great picture on a much larger than flat panel screen!
A 100” screen has 77% more area than a 75”.

I was inducted into Dealerscope's 2022 Hall of Fame and here's an ad that Hisense created and ran in the magazine. Thank you to all of my friends at Hisense!
