(April 18, 2023) Milled from a single block of 6063 architectural-grad aluminum alloy, HED Technologies' new closed-back Unity headphones flexes some serious tech muscle. With a price tag of $2,199, buyers should certainly expect more than your general run-of-the-mill wireless experience, and more is what they'll get.

At its most basic level, Unity gives music fans access to high-quality Bluetooth 5.3 streaming – nothing fancy there. But for those wanting to kick things up a notch, a Full-Fidelity mode utilizes onboard Wi-Fi streaming for lossless Hi-Res audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. Listeners can tap into HED's own Multisource Music Player Unity app (iOS, Android) to source FLAC files from a local media server, or sync with Hi-Res music services like Qobuz. Either way, extremely pure audio is guaranteed.

Internally, Unity carries an integrated dual-core processor, 16 gigs of onboard eMMC memory, and one gig of RAM. It also has an onboard nine-axis Internal Measurement Unit (IMU) that's made up of a 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and a 3-axis compass for head-tracking motion detection. You'll also find 12 dedicated microphones for Active Noise Cancellation and elimination of background noise during calls. All of those technologies are complimented by 40mm titanium-coated drivers that deliver a frequency response of 20Hz-22kHz.

Sound quality is tunable using both preset and customizable EQ settings. A function button located on the outer shell of the headphone defaults to toggle noise canceling on and off, but it's reprogrammable to turn EQ settings on and off, with more functions planned with future updates.

Physically speaking, Unity isn't your ordinary-looking high-end headphone. Its sleek, minimalist design features aluminum alloy ear cups, a rigid carbon fiber-infused nylon chassis, and a flexible polyamide headband. The headband, paired with height-adjustable ear cups, offers a perfect fit that evenly distributes the weight of the headset across the entire head to minimize the need for excessive clamping around the ears. And memory foam ear pads with a cooling gel and velvety-soft microfiber complete a rather comfortable-sounding fit and finish.

Unity's onboard Lithium-ion 3.8V battery provides six to eight hours of streaming playback and can be re-charged to 100% within an hour and a half. Owners can also enjoy tunes through a 3.5mm adapter cable.

eager to try these out, but will most certainly wait until a company like Focal, Sennheiser and Apple, etc. makes its own versions to compare.
