As I do a fair bit of late night viewing (streaming and blu-ray), I want to invest in a pair of over-the-ears headphones.
But I'm keen on getting the full effect of the soundtrack (7.1; Atmos, etc.).

I've found that these days this can be done using normal headphones run through a process that achieves a virtual soundfield.
However, everything I've found so far either needs a decoding AV receiver, or has to connect to a pc/android/apple device.
All I want to do is connect to the TV, with a suitable device in the path e.g. Creative's Super XFI inline amp (apparently not suitable for TV).

Any ideas?

Thanks Todd.
Following your advice, I've had a look at the Atlantic Tech Headphones.
The FS-HR280's have "quad" drivers. But all that means is they have a woofer and a tweeter in each cup. They make no mention of surround sound.

I became quite interested in the Sound BlasterX G6, which is an external inline DSP/DAC that can emphasis footsteps behind you for instance.
This is mainly for gaming, and I think it could skew the various audio channels of a movie.

So in the end I have ordered a pair of Sennheiser RS 175 phones.
They have a "surround sound" feature which can be turned off or on.
I assume they just simulate "surround sound". Although maybe if fed say a Dolby Digital signal (which my Hisense TV can do), they can decode it.
Worst case, I've still get a fairly decent set of wireless phones, so that my wife in the other room can listen to her programs in peace - which is what this is all about. :hail:

I think you're only going to find simulated surround sound. Did you check into any gaming headphones?

Received the Sennheisers, and have so far ran them digital (optical) with the TV set on PCM.
Haven't noticed any real "surround sound", but the Surround Sound settings (there a medium and a full setting) definitely stop the effect of having the main vocal/voice coming from the middle of your head.
The sound is still inside the cups (maybe a bit forward) which is a vast improvement from inside your head.
The bass boost is great for movies and the vocals are still very clear.
Even though they don't give any real surround effects (so far in my limited use), I'm happy to keep using them.

@Todd Anderson - I had looked at headphones and accessories designed for gaming, but thought the Sennheiser's specs were more what I was after.
Disappointed with the surround effects, but like the sound anyway.
Haven't tried an analogue connection yet, where the TV can be set to Dolby Digital. Don't know if it will make any difference.

I think you need better processing. Have you done any research on Auro 3D and Auro Upmixing for headphones?

I haven't done any recent research, but I think I had Auro in the back of my mind when I was looking for "surround sound" headphones.
Thanks - I'll look into it a bit more. :)
